Excerpt: ... thirty-second degree Mason; atttending physician of Masonic Home and Hospital; lecturer on medicine at Nurses' Training School, St. Margaret's Hospital, and local examiner for National Hospital for Consumptives, Denver, Colo. On April 29, 1914, Dr. Mount's opportunities for valued and valuable services to the city and community were enhanced by his marriage to Miss Kate Steiner, an accomplished young lady of Montgomery, who is very active in various organizations, notably in the Federated Women's Club, dividing her time and attention between the exquisite and affectionate care of a bright baby, Bernard, Jr.. and the interests and endeavors which her prominent station in the community entails. JACOB MOSCOVITZ The Jewish race has produced the best body of business men which the world has ever seen. Regardless of the line to which they turn their attention, they seldom fail to achieve success. We find an example of this kind in the life of Mr. Jacob Moscovitz, who was born in Bassarolia, Kishnip, Guberne, Russia, in December, 1867. He was the son of Solomon Moscovitz, who was a prosperous merchant of his native town, and also a prominent scholar. At the age of 20, young Jacob decided that the new world would offer him better opportunities than he could find at home, so he came to America and found his way to Detroit, Mich., where he peddled for eight years. He was then connected with a five-and-ten-cent store for about one year, after which he engaged in the commission business. His next venture was in the bottling business, his first establishment being on Adelaide street. Here he was very successful, and after fours years he removed the business to his present location at 246 Windsor street, where he is conducting one of the largest...

Sixty-two of the most accomplished Jews in America speak intimately—most for the first time—about how they feel about being Jewish. In unusually candid interviews conducted by former 60 Minutes producer Abigail Pogrebin, celebrities ranging from Sarah Jessica Parker to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, from Larry King to Mike Nichols, reveal how resonant, crucial or incidental being Jewish is in their lives. The connections they have to their Jewish heritage range from hours in synagogue to bagels and lox; but every person speaks to the weight and pride of their Jewish history, the burdens and pleasures of observance, the moments they’ve felt most Jewish (or not). This book of vivid, personal conversations uncovers how being Jewish fits into a public life, and also how the author’s evolving religious identity was changed by what she heard. · Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg, Gene Wilder, Joan Rivers, and Leonard Nimoy talk about their startling encounters with anti-Semitism. · Kenneth Cole, Eliot Spitzer, and Ronald Perelman explore the challenges of intermarriage. · Mike Wallace, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ruth Reichl express attitudes toward Israel that vary from unquestioning loyalty to complicated ambivalence. · William Kristol scoffs at the notion that Jewish values are incompatible with Conservative politics. · Alan Dershowitz, raised Orthodox, talks about why he gave up morning prayer. · Shawn Green describes the pressure that comes with being baseball’s Jewish star. · Natalie Portman questions the ostentatious bat mitzvahs of her hometown. · Tony Kushner explains how being Jewish prepared him for being gay. · Leon Wieseltier throws down the gauntlet to Jews who haven’t taken the trouble to study Judaism. These are just a few key moments from many poignant, often surprising, conversations with public figures whom most of us thought we already knew. “When my mother got her nose job, she wanted me to get one, too. She said I would be happier.”—Dustin Hoffman “It’s a heritage to be proud of. And then, too, it’s something that you can’t escape because the world won’t let you; so it’s a good thing you can be proud of it.” —Ruth Bader Ginsburg “My wife [Kate Capshaw] chose to do a full conversion before we were married in 1991, and she married me as a Jew. I think that, more than anything else, brought me back to Judaism.”—Steven Spielberg “As someone who was born in Israel, you’re put in a position of defending Israel because you know how much is at stake.”—Natalie Portman

The Rest Of Us written by Stephen Birmingham and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-01 with History categories.

The New York Times–bestselling history of the Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland who altered the American landscape from New York to Hollywood. The wave of Eastern European Jewish immigrants who swept into New York in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by way of Ellis Island were not welcomed by the Jews who had arrived decades before. These refugees from czarist Russia and the Polish shtetls who came to America to escape pogroms and persecution were considered barbaric, uneducated, and too steeped in the traditions of the “old country” to be accepted by the more refined and already well-established German-Jewish community. But the new arrivals were tough, passionate, and determined, and in no time they were moving up from the ghetto tenements of New York’s Lower East Side to make their marks and their fortunes across the country in a variety of fields, from media and popular music to fashion, motion pictures, and even organized crime. Among the unforgettable personages author Stephen Birmingham profiles are radio pioneer David Sarnoff, makeup mogul Helena Rubinstein, Hollywood tycoons Samuel Goldwyn and Harry Cohn, Broadway composer Irving Berlin, and mobster Meyer Lansky. From the author of “Our Crowd”, comes this treasure trove of fascinating tales and unforgettable “rags-to-riches” success stories that celebrates the indomitable spirit of a unique community.
