Democracy at Work: Pressure and Propaganda in Portugal and Brazil addresses democracy both as an institutional value system and as a practice. How are the media exerting their mediation role? How are the media re-(a)presenting the political world to society? Are different media voices offering diversified and complementary perspectives on politics? Rememorando o golpe civil-militar ocorrido no Brasil, que completa neste 2024 seus 60 anos, lançamos a segunda edição do livro Reinventando o otimismo: ditadura, propaganda e imaginário social no Brasil, de Carlos Fico. Publicada originalmente em 1997, a obra analisa a propaganda política que o regime militar brasileiro produziu no período 1969-77, focalizando a velha temática do "otimismo" (e seu reverso, a do "pessimismo"), e mostrando a dimensão política dessas ideologias durante o período. Nesta análise, é possível entender por que "os tópicos do otimismo - a exuberância natural, a democracia racial, o congraçamento social, a harmônica integração nacional, a cordialidade e a festividade do povo brasileiro, entre outros - foram ressignificados pela propaganda militar tendo em vista a nova configuração socioeconômica que se pretendia inaugurar". Uma propaganda baseada em um discurso ético-moral com estrutura, na qual teóricos e militantes se apropriaram, via golpe, do poder de conceituar o que era "nacionalidade", "democracia", "sociedade brasileira", "cultura brasileira", "economia brasileira" e assim por diante.

Esta obra discute a judicialização das eleições e a polarização da disputa política no Brasil a partir das eleições de 1994 a 2014, buscando problematizar a judicialização da política na sociedade brasileira contemporânea por meio da judicialização das eleições no país. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam que, considerando as eleições de 1994 a 2014, houve um aumento da judicialização na disputa eleitoral à medida que se intensificou a polarização política, entre os anos 1994 e 2006. Finalmente, as expressões no Direito Eleitoral em um cenário de polarização política sinalizam que quanto maior a polarização nesse cenário, mais tenderá a ser judicializada a competição política. Ademais, este estudo conclui que o processo democrático brasileiro, bem como a organização do sistema partidário em nosso país, não se expressa conectado com a base política popular, mas sim advém de um movimento que caracteriza o afastamento da população, que se manifesta de “cima para baixo”. É notório que os atores “partidos políticos” nascem envoltos por uma casca parlamentar, assim deixam de ser expressão das lutas e dos movimentos relacionados à vida cotidiana e da organização política da população brasileira.
