Kopyl im Juni 1942: Einen Tag, nachdem deutsche Polizei in dem weißrussischen Ort etwa 1.000 jüdische Frauen, Männer und Kinder ermordet hatte, erschien dort eine Propaganda-Staffel der Wehrmacht, hielt Vorträge und verteilte Flugblätter sowie Zeitungen. Terror und Propaganda der Besatzungsmacht waren unlösbar miteinander verknüpft. Die Autorin rekonstruiert anschaulich - auch anhand bisher nicht bekannter Akten aus osteuropäischen Archiven - die umfangreichen deutschen Propagandaaktivitäten gegenüber Zivilisten und Partisanen. Sie zeigt, dass Propaganda ein systematisch eingesetztes Instrument zur Erreichung der miltärischen und besatzungspolitischen Ziele war. So waren die deutschen Propagandisten an der Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Morde an sowjetischen Funktionären und dem Geno-zid an der jüdischen Bevölkerung ebenso beteiligt wie an der Ausplün-derung des Landes, der Partisanenbekämpfung oder der massenhaften Verschleppung von 'Ostarbeitern'. Legenden, die von den Beteiligten nach 1945 zu ihrer Entlastung vor-gebracht wurden und bis heute die Forschung prägen, werden korrigiert, so z. B. die Behauptung, es habe gegenüber der Zivilbevölkerung keine systematische psychologische Kriegführung gegeben und das falsche Bild, es habe unvereinbare ostpolitische Vorstellungen innerhalb der deutschen militärischen und politischen Führung gegeben.

A penetrating study of the German army's military campaigns, relations with the Nazi regime, and complicity in Nazi crimes across occupied Europe For decades after 1945, it was generally believed that the German army, professional and morally decent, had largely stood apart from the SS, Gestapo, and other corps of the Nazi machine. Ben Shepherd draws on a wealth of primary sources and recent scholarship to convey a much darker, more complex picture. For the first time, the German army is examined throughout the Second World War, across all combat theaters and occupied regions, and from multiple perspectives: its battle performance, social composition, relationship with the Nazi state, and involvement in war crimes and military occupation. This was a true people's army, drawn from across German society and reflecting that society as it existed under the Nazis. Without the army and its conquests abroad, Shepherd explains, the Nazi regime could not have perpetrated its crimes against Jews, prisoners of war, and civilians in occupied countries. The author examines how the army was complicit in these crimes and why some soldiers, units, and higher commands were more complicit than others. The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" in Nazi Germany describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called “Judenforschung” (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting “Jewish problem”. Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution.

History and collective memories influence a nation, its culture, and institutions; hence, its domestic politics and foreign policy. That is the case in the Intermarium, the land between the Baltic and Black Seas in Eastern Europe. The area is the last unabashed rampart of Western Civilization in the East, and a point of convergence of disparate cultures. Marek Jan Chodakiewicz focuses on the Intermarium for several reasons. Most importantly because, as the inheritor of the freedom and rights stemming from the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian/Ruthenian Commonwealth, it is culturally and ideologically compatible with American national interests. It is also a gateway to both East and West. Since the Intermarium is the most stable part of the post-Soviet area, Chodakiewicz argues that the United States should focus on solidifying its influence there. Drawing on oral-history interviews and other sources, this work provides fascinating accounts of how Soviets, Jews, and Roma fared in the Russian city of Smolensk under the 26-month Nazi occupation. The 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union ("Operation Barbarossa") significantly altered the lives of the civilians in occupied Russian territories, yet these individuals' stories are overlooked by most scholarly treatments ofthe attack and its aftermath. This study, drawing on oral-history interviews and a broad range of archival sources, provides a fascinating and detailed account of the everyday life of Soviets, Jews, Roma, and Germans in the city of Smolensk during its twenty-six months under Nazi rule. Smolensk under the Nazis records the profound and painful effects of the invasion and occupation on the 30,000 civilian residents (out of a prewar population ofroughly 155,000) who remained in this border town. It also compares Nazi and Stalinist local propaganda efforts, as well as examining the stance of Russian civilians, thereby investigating what it meant to support -- or hinder --the new Nazi-German and collaborating Russian authorities. By underlining the human dimensions of the war and its often neglected long-term effects, Laurie Cohen promotes a more complex understanding of life under occupation.
