Excerpt from Prophets and Patriarchs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints The Biographies of the Apostles and Patriarchs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, by Apostle Matthias F. Cowley, were written for the "Southern Star." When that periodical suspended publication not more than half the letters from Brother Cowley had been published. The biographies which did appear, however, were very popular among the Elders and Saints of the Southern States Mission, and numerous calls came for them from the West. They are written in a simple and easy style, abounding in interesting incidents and valuable historical facts. It was the desire and original intention of the author to submit the biographies of the First Seven Presidents of Seventies and Presiding Bishopric for the readers of this little volume, but not having these prepared for publication, and the opportunity presenting itself, almost without warning, for the publication of those already prepared, it was thought best to leave them for a subsequent edition. As the articles contain much valuable information, and their publication will be instrumental in doing good, I accept as a labor of love the pleasant task of presenting, in book form, all of Apostle Cowley's biographies to the "Star" - those which appeared, those which were ready for publication when the paper suspended, and a few recently prepared. Joseph Fielding Smith (1838-1918) was born in Far West, Missouri to Hyrum Smith (1800-1844) and Mary Fielding. After his father's martyrdom, he traveled with his mother to Utah. She died while he was still young and he lived in several homes while growing up. While still in his teenage years, he served a mission to Hawaii. In 1866 he became a counselor to Brigham Young. He served the remaining years as a counselor in the First Presidency, an apostle and as the sixth president of the LDS Church. He had six wives and was the father of a number of children.

Excerpt from Assassination of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the Prophet and the Patriarch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: Also, a Condensed History of the Expulsion of the Saints From Nauvoo They thirsted, like the beast of prey, for blood, and nothing short of that would satisfy them. And therefore, instead of taking the peaceable and quiet course suggested above, the cry was raised far and near, that Smith refused to subject himself to the law, in not going with the constable to Carthage. The writ of Habeas Corpus, and the action of the Municipal Court, they refused to recognise and they sent runners, making flaming speeches, throughout Hancock and the neighbouring counties, to excite the people. In this way they succeeded in procuring several thousand volun teers, regularly ofiicered in martial order, to put themselves under the direc tion of said constable as his posse, to again arrest Joseph Smith, in defiance of his liberation, or to exterminate, literally and utterly, the Mormon, people, man, woman, and child, and then to lay Nauvoo in ashes. Such was their language in the Warsaw Signal, and in all their numerous meetings, until their forces had collected together. The idea of making the arrest spoken of, seemed gradually to wear away as their forces increased, and utter. Extermination seemed now uppermost in their thoughts, and expressed in all their movements. Volunteers from abroad were constantly invited, even from Missouri, by their corresponding committee, and by the Warsaw Signal. Neither were these calls in vain - they were promptly responded to, and a constant increase of the mob forces was the result. But before I proceed further, I will mention one circumstance which I had. Like to have forgotten, and that is this - as soon as the Expositor was des troyed, some of the lawyers gave it as their opinion, that a press or public journal, whatever might be its character, could not be constitutionally de stroyed as a nuisance and that the City Council had become liable to damages. The mayor, therefore, immediately addressed the Governor a letter, informing him of what had transpired, with the reasons that led to it, an stated emphatically that if it should be ascertained that the City Council had transcended any legal bounds, they were ready and willing to make all the satisfaction that the law required. And lest this letter should not reach his Excellency, there was another written containing the same things, with the additional information that large forces were preparing to make a descent upon. Nauvoo, to avenge the destruction of the Expositor. This last was borne by an. Express, despatched for that purpose. The Governor, however, missed both, . Being from home.
