Esta publicacion presenta las actas de la Reunion Tecnica regional sobre politicas y programas de semillas en America Latina y el Caribe que se llevo a cabo en Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, del 20 al 24 de marzo de 2000. La Reunion fue organizada por el Centro de Investigacion Cientifica de Yucatan con el apoyo tecnico y financiero del Servicio de Semillas y Recursos Fitogeneticos de la FAO. De acuerdo con el Plan de Accion Mundial sobre los Recursos Fitogeneticos adoptado en Leipzig, Alemania, la Declaracion de Roma sobre la Seguridad Alimentaria Mundial y el Plan de Accion de la Cumbre Mundial sobre la Alimentacion, la Reunion reconocio que el principal desafio que enfrentan los paises de America Latina y el Caribe es el uso sostenible de la enorme riqueza de recursos fitogeneticos de la region. Las deliberaciones se centraron en la identificacion de mecanismos apropiados para asegurar el mantenimiento, la produccion y la justa distribucion de semillas de buena calidad de una vasta gama de variedades de plantas, contribuyendo asi a la seguridad alimentaria nacional y regional. La Reunion propuso establecer un Foro Consultivo de Semillas para America Latina y el Caribe destinado a facilitar el manejo, la utilizacion y la distribucion ordenada de informaciones y materiales relacionados con los recursos fitogeneticos para el desarrollo agricola sostenible. Este Foro facilitara la colaboracion cientifica y tecnica entre los paises y las regiones en materia de produccion y abastecimiento de semillas, y promovera la evaluacion, conservacion y utilizacion de los recursos fitogeneticos en la region."
