This anthology combines some of the finest writing by such well-known writers as Leacock, Moodie, Ernest Thompson Seton and Lucy Maud Montgomery with fascinating pieces by lesser-known names such as George Copway (the first Canadian native writer to have his work published in English) and Lady Agnes Macdonald (the wife of Canada’s first prime minister, and a popular writer of great verve and enthusiasm). In addition to three genres of fiction the anthology includes two important varieties of non-fiction in which early Canadians made a strong and distinctive contribution: Travel and Exploration Narratives and Memoirs and Descriptive Sketches.

Excerpt from The Canada Book of Prose and Verse, Vol. 4 Even in recording events as they were supposed to have happened, early writers saw no harm In adding and subtracting, in heightening the bright lights, or deepening the shadows, to make a story better. Early history 13 in consequence so mixed with myth and legend that it is difficult to separate them. It is the poet, not the historian, who in early days records the deeds of his ancestors, and tries to glorify them. The First Day Of Spring written by Raymond Knister and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1976 with Literary Collections categories.

Raymond Knister had a strong sense of commitment both to his own career and to literature, particularly Canadian literature. In his ten working years he proved himself a prolific writer with wide-ranging interests. Although his work has appeared in many anthologies of Canadian literature, there remains a great deal of out of print or unpublished material. This volume brings together not only for his more well-known stories but also all his unpublished stories, a few travel pieces, and several examples of his literary criticism. Knister's stories are often strongly regional, and draw on rural Ontario for their setting and characters. Collected together here for the first time is a group of sketches dealing anecdotally with life in a village in southwestern Ontario. Also included are two stories arising from his experiences as a cab driver in Chicago in the 1920s, 'Innocent Man, ' and 'Hackman's Night.' His essays focusing on literary matters and the traditions and problems of Canadian literature show a keenly critical mind. The First Day of Spring is an important rediscovery of one of Canada's best writers of the 1920s.

Canadian Content written by Sarah Norton and has been published by Cengage Learning this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-17 with College readers categories.

Canadian Content has a long history as one of Canada's leading composition readers and is known as the respected standard in the market. This book is designed to develop the reading, analytical, and writing skills of post-secondary students who are studying composition for practical purposes: they need to write academic papers now, and they will need to write professional prose in the workplace. Unlike its competitors, Canadian Content arranges the readings within each unit in ascending order of difficulty, so instructors can easily identify readings appropriate to their students' skill levels. All of the pieces are well written, relevant to student interests, and engaging. Some are humorous, some are serious, and a few are provocative. Two-thirds of the readings are by Canadian writers, and many touch on the experience of being Canadian. These essays range across the Canadian geographical, cultural, and demographic maps. Each reading is preceded by a short biographical note and followed by contextual definitions of unusual words and phrases and by two sets of analytical questions: the first set ("Structure and Strategy") leads students to an understanding of the essay's structure and style; the second set ("Content and Purpose") leads them to a deeper understanding of the essay's meaning. These questions can be used to guide class discussion, small-group work, or independent analysis. In addition to the 63 readings, Canadian Content includes instruction on reading and writing to be understood, and instruction in seven rhetorical modes as well as additional essays that combine modes.

Canadian Writers in 1984 is a special double length, hardback edition of the 100th issue of Canadian Literature. The book not only celebrates a publishing landmark in the history of the journal but also reflects the incredible richness of Canada's contemporary literary scene. The collection features the work of outstanding new writers as well as poems and essays written especially for this issue by Canada's most famous poets, novelists, dramatists, and essayists. Among the 29 essayists are Matt Cohen, Timothy Findley, Naim Kattan, Irving Layton, Dorothy Livesay, Eli Mandel, Jane Rule, Aritha Van Herk, and George Woodcock. The writings exhibit a diversity of styles and themes: Margaret Laurence on war and peace, Eric Nicol on commercial writing, Marian Engel on starting a new novel, James Reaney on regionalism, David Watmough on places, and David Helwig on arguing with God. The poets comprise a virtual "Who's Who" in Canadian poetry today: Margaret Atwood, Bill Bissett, Barry Dempster, Joy Kogawa, Dennis Lee, George McWhirter, Susan Musgrave, Michael Ondaatje, Al Purdy, Robin Skelton, Raymond Souster, and Tom Wayman are among over 60 of the poets represented. Prefaces to the book have been contributed by Governor General Edward Schreyer; Dr. George Pederson, President of the University of British Columbia; and Canada's grand man of letters, Mavor Moore.
