This report reviews the definition of Canadian content as it applies to film & television production and its relationship to public funding. After an introduction on the review and a summary of stakeholder comments, chapter 2 puts Canadian content into perspective with respect to how it is currently administered & defined, and what it represents in terms of production activity. It also analyzes in detail the degree to which the current definition, more specifically the ten-point creative system, responds to today's realities. It provides information on how some foreign countries promote & determine their national content, and highlights major weaknesses in the current Canadian content system. Chapter 3 proposes fundamental changes to the Canadian content policy infrastructure in three key area: how a Canadian-content production is defined, how Canadian content is administered overall, and how to encourage the greater use of Canadian creators. Chapter 4 examines two areas believed to be integral to the Canadian content system: international treaty co-production and theatrical distribution. Chapter 5 considers the particular challenges faced by Aboriginal & minority communities within the Canadian film & television sectors. Annexes include a list of recommendations, summaries of stakeholder input to the review, and results of a creative & technical cost analysis of various types of productions.

From the back cover: While Canadians have been leaders in many aspects of communications technology, the content has been mainly foreign. So, too, have the applications of new technology typically been property of alliances of corporations in the U.S., Europe and Japan ... As the pace of the "globalization" of culture quickens, Canada's broadcasting, recording, film and publishing industries will face formidable challenges. Communications analyst Peter Lyman describes the impact of the new technologies on Canadian cultural industries and proposes strategies he feels must be accepted to make these industries viable in an ever-changing marketplace

Canada S Cultural Industries written by Paul Audley and has been published by Lorimer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with Business & Economics categories.

From the back cover: Books, television, records - media such as these provide a country with its entertainment, information, opinion and analysis - a major part of its culture. But the "import" of culture from more powerful countries has always meant disadvantages for Canada's "cultural industries" whose smaller market dictates higher costs. As these industries suffer economically so does Canadian culture ... However, by both their buying habits and responses to polls, Canadians have shown that they support Canadian content. Despite this fact, an annual cultural deficit of $750 million and an obvious threat to Canadian autonomy, responses from government have been fitful and sometimes even counter-productive. For both English and French Canada, Paul Audley provides a wealth of information on the state of the cultural industries; newspapers, magazines, books, recording, radio, television and film. Audley pays particular attention to problems of Canadian content and control, and how government could formulate new policies to strengthen these vital industries.

Canada has one of the most advanced mass-media systems in the world, which allows Canadians more access to American culture via television, the movies, and the Internet than ever before. At the same time, governments support the production and distribution of Canadian content to Canadians. In this fully updated fourth edition, Mary Vipond traces the rise of the traditional mass media in Canada, explores the new media, and discusses the influcence of old mass media on new media. Clearly written and persuasively argued, The Mass Media in Canada demonstrates the huge challenges government face today in trying to influence media content and considers the troubling questions of who decides what we read, watch, and hear.

This is the first in-depth analysis of major French- and English-Canadian news companies to show the impact of cross-media ownership on the diversity of new content. Surprisingly, the study lays to rest fears over content convergence of newspaper and television network ownership by Canadian media giants Canwest Global, CTVglobemedia, and Quebecor. Content-sharing between newspaper and television properties of these giant companies did not occur. This leads the authors to examine why, and to assess problems that mass media in Canada will likely face in the coming years, particularly as newsrooms strive to adapt to new media and the online environment. Policy makers, media executives, and journalism students and professors will find this study invaluable.
