Protected Area Governance and Management presents a compendium of original text, case studies and examples from across the world, by drawing on the literature, and on the knowledge and experience of those involved in protected areas. The book synthesises current knowledge and cutting-edge thinking from the diverse branches of practice and learning relevant to protected area governance and management. It is intended as an investment in the skills and competencies of people and consequently, the effective governance and management of protected areas for which they are responsible, now and into the future. The global success of the protected area concept lies in its shared vision to protect natural and cultural heritage for the long term, and organisations such as International Union for the Conservation of Nature are a unifying force in this regard. Nonetheless, protected areas are a socio-political phenomenon and the ways that nations understand, govern and manage them is always open to contest and debate. The book aims to enlighten, educate and above all to challenge readers to think deeply about protected areas—their future and their past, as well as their present. The book has been compiled by 169 authors and deals with all aspects of protected area governance and management. It provides information to support capacity development training of protected area field officers, managers in charge and executive level managers.

By many measures, Earth’s ecosystems are stressed. Actually, it may be more accurate to say that Earth’s remaining ecosystems are stressed. The fact is that most of the planet’s biomes support only a fraction of the biological communities they once did, primarily because humans have converted large areas of land to alternate uses. More than two-thirds of the global temperate forests, half of the grasslands, even a third of desert ecosystems have been conscripted for human uses like agriculture, construction, harvest and extraction. Cultivation alone covers a quarter of the habitable terrestrial surface. Aquatic ecosystems have not fared any better. An estimated half of the world’s wetlands are gone, particularly those of coastal regions or on arable land. About a fifth of the coral reefs and a third of the m- grove swamps of a century ago have been lost in just the last few decades. The volume of water impounded by dams quadrupled over the same period – it now far exceeds the volume of water in unimpeded rivers (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005; Mitsch and Gosselink 2007). So any assessment of ecosystem status is necessarily an analysis of fragments and remnants, and many of these are degraded by one or more anthropogenic stressors.

Taking into consideration the fact that many ecosystems are under-represented in protected areas of land and water and traditional management methods have often been ineffective, this volume describes how improvements can be made. Specifically, it explores ways of ensuring that all major ecosystems are safeguarded, and innovative approaches to conservation involving individuals, communities, companies and governments. The essence of the approach taken in the text is to build partnerships with those who have a stake in the care of land and water resources.

This book documents, for the first time in a single text, the multi-disciplinary task of managing protected areas. An applied text, it presents numerous case studies and snapshots that demonstrate the stunning variety of Australian protected areas. It focuses on the conservation future of Australia's outstanding natural and cultural heritage, which is displayed in reserves such as Kosciuszko, Kakadu, Shark Bay, South West Tasmania, and the Great Barrier Reef. The book has three parts: Part A explains the environmental, social, political, and historical context of management. Part B examines in depth the main principles and practices of such management. These chapters cover a variety of areas: using, obtaining, and managing information; planning, administration; economics; natural heritage; cultural heritage; threatening processes; incidents; tourism and visitor management; working with the community; indigenous people and protected areas; conservation at a landscape scale; and managing for the future. Part C is a summary of information on the protected areas in each Australian state and territory. This innovative book will help students and practitioners improve the management of protected areas in Australia and elsewhere, Of value to anyone with an active interest in the conservation and improved management of protected areas, the book will interest and assist park neighbors, park visitors, rural communities, politicians, conservationists, and indigenous peoples. It will also be of benefit to protected area managers around the world, given that generic issues faced by Australian managers are common to most other areas. Recognizing this, the book has been endorsed as a joint IUCN (The World Conservation Union) initiative.

Protected areas have become an increasingly important tool both in the conservation of biodiversity and in revenue generation through sustainable use. This is the only sure way to guarantee the protection necessary for many species, habitats and ecosystems in the future. Integrated Protected Area Management features contributions that consider the design, management and sustainable use of these regions. Three principal aspects are considered: the theory and practice of designation community-based conservation and the concept of sustainability identifying priorities for management. The emphasis throughout is on the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to planning and the active involvement of all stakeholders in decision-making processes as a means of ensuring long-term sustainability.
