Refugee policy profiles were compiled for a consultation of the World Council of the Churches of Christ, held May 14-18, 1984. For each country, the following outline is given: 1) government policy - refugee/asylum definitions, temporary asylum criteria, right of appeal; 2) government procedures for receptions, status determination, procuration of assistance, refoulement. Issues of special interest to particular countries are discussed. Tables are given showing numbers of refugee arrivals, cases pending, and asylum granted or denied. Types of government assistance are enumerated. Possible roles that may be adopted by the national churches are defined, including assisting materially or legally, advocacy and sanctuary. Church relations with individual governments are described as well as international cooperation between national churches. The countries represented here include: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Republic of Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US.

This volume presents a compilation of cross-disciplinary essays written by representatives of non-governmental and inter-governmental organisations, practising lawyers, academics, researchers and a psychiatrist, which reflect the heightened concern among European refugee and human rights organisations about the increasing practice of detaining asylum seekers.
