Was können wir heute daraus für unsere eigene Vergangenheitsbewältigung und Sicht auf Kirche und Politik lernen? Diese und weitere Fragen werden in einer vergleichenden Studie auf einer breiten Quellenbasis wissenschaftlich fundiert und zugleich allgemeinverständlich aufgearbeitet. Karl Barth (Bekennende Kirche), Walter Künneth (Jungreformatorische Bewegung) and Emanuel Hirsch (Deutsche Christen) were certainly influential, distinguished and representative theologians in the so-called "Church Struggle" in Germany in the 1930s. The way they interpreted and talked about this struggle is of great importance for our own understanding of this turbulent era of church history. The main goal of this study is to examine the influence of theological thinking into the interpretation of the "Church-Struggle" to help us to find our own way to deal with this dubious chapter in the history between church and state and complicated Inter-Church Relations.

Friedrich Gogarten verstand sich als Fürsprecher einer alternativen protestantischen Religiosität und rebellierte gegen diejenigen geistigen Grundlagen, die er mit dem Liberalismus in Verbindung brachte. Öffentlich bekannt wurde er in der Weimarer Republik, als er Mitbegründer der Dialektischen Theologie wurde, die die imposanteste Aufbruchsbewegung im Protestantismus des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts wurde. Im "Dritten Reich" glaubte Gogarten, die Chance einer religiösen und gesellschaftlichen Erneuerung zu sehen und schloss sich daher kurzzeitig den "Deutschen Christen" an. Als sich seine Hoffnungen nicht realisierten, zog er sich aus allen kirchenpolitischen Aktivitäten zurück und hüllte sich in Schweigen. Nach einer Zeit der Desillusionierung stemmte er sich mit neuer Kraft gegen das liberale Denken in der Bundesrepublik. Vor allem im Themenspektrum der Säkularisierung konnte er zentrale Elemente seiner Theologie aufs Neue zur Entfaltung bringen. Anhand von neuem Archivmaterial analysiert Timothy Goering detailliert die Kontexte und Umbrüche von Gogartens Werdegang. Im Lichte seiner Biographie wird ein alternativer Protestantismus sichtbar, der in der Forschung durch den starken Fokus auf die Kirchen- und Theologiegeschichte überlagert und vergessen worden ist.

The study aims to analyse the impact of Luther's theology on his thoughts about music. It limits itself to an analysis of the topic by focusing on the three most important statements of Luther about music in his unfinished treatise Περι της μουσικης [On Music]. The first statement is that music is "a gift of God and not of man" [Dei donum hominum est], second, music "creates joyful soul" [facit letos animos], and third, music "drives away the devil" [fugat diabolum]. The relation between these three statements to each other and to Luther's theology in general can be understood in connection with his personal experiences and commitments to music, which were undergirded by his theology. Luther, as a man of medieval times, took for granted the existence of the devil, and many of his writings contained frequent references to the personal attacks of the devil, where it influenced his thoughts about music.

The withdrawal of Soviet troops is a so far largely unresearched process of international political and military reorganization after 1989/90, which was accompanied by political, economic, social and geopolitical factors that had different effects in different nations. The anthology contains national studies that examine the withdrawal from a scientific perspective. But it also analyses the international conditions that led to the geopolitical reorganization and reduction of weapons. In addition to the country studies, the reforms and the collapse of the Soviet empire are examined from a military-political perspective in order to make the conditions for returning home understandable. Finally, the legacy of the retreat is also considered in the light of current policies and the current threats to the countries of East Central Europe from the increasing aggression in this geopolitical space.
