Jewish Cattle Traders in the German Countryside, 1919–1939, explores the social and economic networks in which this group operated and the informal but durable bonds between Jewish cattle traders and farmers that not even incessant Nazi attacks could break. Stefanie Fischer combines approaches from social history, economic history, and sociology to challenge the longstanding cliché of the shady Jewish cattle dealer. By focusing on trust and social connections rather than analyzing economic trends, Fischer exposes the myriad inconsistencies that riddled the process of expelling the Jews from Germany. Jewish Cattle Traders in the German Countryside, 1919–1939, examines the complexities of relations between Jews and non-Jews who were engaged in economic and social exchange. ’Long live liberty, equality, fraternity and dynamite’ So went the traditional slogan of the radical liberals in Greater Swabia, the south-western part of modern Germany. This book investigates the development of what the author terms ’popular liberalism’ in this region, in order to present a more nuanced understanding of political and cultural patterns in Germany up to the early 1930s. In particular, the author offers an explanation for the success of National Socialism before 1933 in certain regions of South Germany, arguing that the radical liberal sub-culture was not subsumed by the Nazi Party, but instead changed its form of representation. Together with the famous völkish fraction and the leftist fraction within the chapters of the Nazi Party, there were radical-liberal associations, ex-members of radical-liberal parties, sympathizers with these parties, and notables with a radical orientation derived from family and regional traditions. These people and associations believed that the Nazi Party could fulfil their radical - liberal vision, rooted in the local democratic and liberal traditions which stretched from 1848 to the early 20th century. By looking afresh at the relationship between local-regional identities and national politics, this book makes a major contribution to the study of the roots of Nazism.

“Mission is nothing but the one church of God in motion.” With these words the famous German Lutheran theologian Wilhelm Loehe described the essence of missionary work. Mission moves the church and crosses boundaries to form the one universal church. In 1842, Loehe started missionary work in the small Bavarian town of Neuendettelsau in southern Germany, as he sent two young men as “emergency helpers” to North America. He supported the formation of Lutheran congregations that later joined together to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). Together with Friedrich Bauer he founded a mission seminary that sent, until 1985, nearly 900 graduates as pastors and missionaries not only to the USA, but also to Australia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Palestine. From this the present center Mission One World of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria developed, which maintains partnership relations to churches in Africa, Asia/Pacific, and Latin America. This book describes the history of this missionary movement up to the present time and puts the Bavarian missionary work into the context of mission theology and strategies in the twentieth century.

Tales about treacherous Jesuits and scheming popes are an important and pervasive part of European culture. They belong to a set of ideas, images, and practices that, when grouped under the label anti-Catholicism, represent a phenomenon that can be traced back to the Reformation. Anti-Catholic movements and sentiments crossed boundaries between European countries, contributing to the early modern consolidation of national identities. In the nineteenth century, secularist movements adopted and transformed confessional criticism in a new internationalist dimension that was articulated across the whole Western world. A variety of liberal, conservative, secular, Protestant, and other forces gave shape to this counter-image, taking on the function of a pattern from which one’s own ideals and beliefs could be chiselled out. The contributions to this volume show how different national contexts affected the proliferation of anti-Catholic messages over the course of four centuries of European history, and demonstrate that anti-Catholicism constituted a powerful European cross-cultural phenomenon.

Die Studie untersucht die Entstehung einer gemäßigt konservativen Partei (Union nationale républicaine/UNR) im Doubs vor dem Hintergrund der sozialen und kulturellen Prägungen des Departements. Es wird gezeigt, dass die konservative Rechte zunächst im Gefolge der Kirchentrennungsgesetze ab 1902 als katholische Volksaktion entsteht, die eng mit dem Klerus vor Ort verbunden ist. Mit dem Ersten Weltkrieg endet die fundamentalkatholische Ausrichtung dieser Bewegung und sie geht zusammen mit den rechtsliberalen Progressisten ein Wahlbündnis ein, aus der die spätere Partei hervorgeht. Die Nationalsozialisten stießen beim Versuch, Juden aus dem Viehhandel zu verdrängen an die Grenzen ihrer rassistischen Wirtschaftspolitik. Trotz antisemitischer Propaganda hielten viele Bauern an ihren vertrauten Handelspartnern, den jüdischen Viehhändlern, fest. Tatsächlich zählt der Viehhandel zu den ältesten Tätigkeitsfeldern von Juden in Mitteleuropa. Als Viehein- und -verkäufer, aber auch als Kreditgeber und Güterhändler, agierten sie an einer sensiblen Stelle in der Agrargesellschaft. Stefanie Fischer untersucht erstmals die Bedeutung der jüdischen Viehhändler für den ländlichen Raum. Sie beleuchtet, wie sich das Vertrauensverhältnis zwischen Viehhändlern und Bauern aufbaute und wie lange die wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen unter dem Druck antisemitischer Gewalt und Propaganda Bestand hatten. Als Untersuchungsregion dient die bayerische Region Mittelfranken. Dort lebte noch bis 1933 eine der größten jüdischen Gemeinden im Deutschen Reich. Gleichzeitig nahm im Gau von Julius Streicher die antisemitische Gewalt ein besonders scharfes Ausmaß an.
