Irrigation is considered an important factor for agriculture and food security. Knowledge gaps, however, still exist with regard to how farmers in Africa south of Sahara, including Nigeria, are using irrigation. Given the diverse agroecological and socioeconomic environment in countries like Nigeria, understanding the diverse patterns of irrigation use and their associations with household characteristics is important in designing how irrigation can contribute to the agricultural transformation. This report summarizes the typology of farm households and irrigators in Nigeria. We apply a cluster analysis method to the Living Standard Measurement Survey (LSMS)Integrated Survey on Agriculture data and various secondary data. We also compare the costs and inputs used across different irrigation crops, as reported in Nigeria. Findings indicate that the three major irrigation systems in Nigeria are (1) labor-intensive diverted stream irrigation of rice, (2) supplementary irrigation of coarse grains and legumes using groundwater, and (3) dry season irrigation of vegetables. Each crop is irrigated during a specific season and using a specific water source and irrigation system. Farmers choice of irrigation system tends to depend on many factors. For example, in the South, tractorization is often a necessary precondition for rice irrigation. In the North, intensive irrigation of rice and vegetables may make sense only if labor is cheap, whereas irrigation of sorghum and legumes is supplementary and may not affect farm households behaviors. Although more rigorous studies are needed in the future, observed patterns of irrigation use in Nigeria indicate that the policies aiming to raise agricultural productivity and to develop the value chains of key crops may need to be based on an understanding of why irrigation is used in specific ways in different systems and of what the key constraints in scaling up such systems in other locations are.

Esta obra muestra la necesidad de plantear los modelos urbanísticos europeos desde una perspectiva comunitaria. Abordando los principales elementos y parámetros condicionantes de una uniformidad disfrazada de aparente diversidad y que podemos calificar como de Europeización del territorio. El medio ambiente y el desarrollo sostenible como política común y la influencia del soft law en las legislaciones urbanísticas, la concepción de la gestión integrada del medio ambiente y el control ambiental como con-trol indirecto de los usos y el destino del suelo, la cohesión territorial a través de la ordenación del territorio y las infraestructuras, especialmente en el caso de las redes transeuropeas y la directiva de contratos y servicios que conduce hacia una homogeneización del concepto de derecho a urbanizar a través del ordenamiento comunitario y los principios de libre circulación y libertad de empresa son los elementos que estructuran y condicionan desde la Unión Europea una forma de intervención sobre la ciudad y que son analizados en esta obra. Marta Lora-Tamayo Vallvé es Profesora Titular de derecho administrativo en la UNED. Ha dedicado la mayor parte de su labor investigadora al urbanismo desde una perspectiva histórica y comparada. Su preocupación por la tensión entre la intervención administrativa sobre los usos del suelo y el derecho de propiedad, lo público y lo privado en el hacer ciudad laten en todas sus obras. Es miembro de la International Academic Assotiation of Planning Law and Property Rights (IAPLPR) en la que participa activamente en sus congresos y debates de los que esta obra se ha enriquecido.

Since 2007 and the economic meltdown caused by the financial crisis, our societies have been evolving in different ways. New political movements have emerged in Southern Europe and new social movements in pursuit of common concerns are playing a more active role in our daily lives. In a parallel way, after the failure to predict the financial crisis, economist and social science researchers seek fresh thinking and new models that can better explain this new reality. Regulations are of critical importance in shaping the welfare of economies and society. Thus, core legal disciplines are exploring the effects of the financial crisis on social rights, labour market regulations, and civil, common law or international law, among others. With no doubt, the economic crisis has deeply impacted our economic, social, political and legal environment. During the last decade, researchers from a wide range of disciplines have been looking for solutions. Now it is time make a side stop on the way and to gather results. The 1rst International SBRLab Conference, Finding solutions for a post-crisis society, is organized by the Social and Business Research Lab (SBRLab), Universitat Rovira i Virgili. It is as an international and virtual meeting point of interdisciplinary research and researchers. The purpose of this international conference is to bring together researchers from management, economics, political, social and legal disciplines in order to present and discuss new trends in their respective fields.
