Esta nueva edición de la Miscelánea Alfonso IX informa de las actividades realizadas por el Centro de Historia Universitaria Alfonso IX (CEHU), Centro Propio de la Universidad de Salamanca, durante el año 2010. Se presenta, esta vez, con el título monográfico de «Salamanca y su Universidad en el Primer Renacimiento: siglo XV», por ser el tema que articuló los XVII Coloquios Alfonso IX, celebrados en los meses de febrero, marzo y abril de 2010, y cuyas actas se publican en la primera sección del libro, junto con los trabajos de otros especialistas que han sido invitados a participar en este volumen. Con estos Coloquios, organizados en forma de ciclo de conferencias/ponencias y seminarios de investigación en la Facultad de Geografía e Historia de la Universidad de Salamanca, se pretendía dar a conocer un período de la Universidad salmantina insuficientemente tratado por la historiografía universitaria. La importancia concedida al siglo XVI universitario ha desdibujado, cuando no oscurecido, la significación del siglo antecedente. En efecto, en el Cuatrocientos salmantino el humanismo está ya presente en muchas de las manifestaciones culturales de la institución universitaria, y es cuando cambia el paradigma de una Universidad pontificia a una Universidad bajo la órbita monárquica, perceptible con claridad en el reinado de los Reyes Católicos. Por otra parte, la eclosión clásica de la Universidad en su Siglo de Oro no podría entenderse sin la fermentación creativa que tuvo lugar antes, en el siglo XV.

Thomas Aquinas’ Summa theologiae is one of the classics in the history of theology and philosophy. Beyond its influence in the Middle Ages, its importance is also borne out by the fact that it became the subject of commentary. During the sixteenth century it was gradually adopted as the official text for the teaching of scholastic theology in most European Catholic universities. As a result, university professors throughout Europe and the colonial Americas started lecturing and producing commentaries on the Summa and using it as a starting point for many theological and philosophical discussions. Some of the works of major authors such as Vitoria, Soto, Molina, Suárez and Arriaga are nothing more than commentaries on the Summa. This book is the first scholarly endeavour to investigate this commentary tradition. As it examines late scholasticism against its institutional backdrop and contains studies of manuscripts and texts unpublished, it will remain an authoritative source for the research of late scholasticism.
