Le but de cette thèse est de croiser une recherche de philosophie générale (sur la vertu morale et politique de prudence) et une recherche en histoire de la philosophie (sur le statut philosophique du libertinage au XVIIe siècle). Notre travail porte sur le rôle du concept de prudence dans l'œuvre de trois libertins français du XVIIe siècle, François de La Mothe Le Vayer, Gabriel Naudé et Samuel Sorbière. A partir d'une question liminaire élaborée contre la thèse historiographique dominante (pourquoi la réflexion critique des libertins s'arrêterait-elle au seuil du politique ?), il s'agit de montrer que ces auteurs proposent une pensée subversive politiquement, et en cela libertine, au sens où ils détournent la signification première du discours de la " raison d'Etat ", à partir d'une théorisation et d'une pratique de la prudence. En effet celle-ci est pour eux à la fois un objet de réflexion (en tant qu'art politique de la tromperie et art éthique de la dissimulation) et une pratique de l'écriture qui subvertit le discours de l'adversaire. L'analyse successive des multiples aspects de la prudence, dans ses versants politique (hérité de Machiavel), éthique (hérité de la philosophie antique et de Montaigne) et esthétique (hérité de la persécution de u libertinage), permet alors de mieux comprendre la réflexion politique complexe de ces trois auteurs et plus généralement de réfléchir sur la catégorie très polémique de " libertinage " (quelle cohérence a-t-elle au XVIIe siècle ? Quel rapport entretient-elle avec la philosophie ?)

Albert the Great (1200–1280) was a prominent Dominican friar, a leading philosopher, and the teacher of Thomas Aquinas. He also endorsed the use of magic. Controversial though that stance would have been, Albert was never punished or repudiated for what he wrote. Albert’s reception followed instead a markedly different course, leading ultimately to his canonization by the Catholic Church in 1931. But his thoughts about magic have been debated for centuries. Disenchanting Albert the Great takes Albert’s contested reputation as a case study for the long and complex history surrounding the concept of magic and magic’s relationship to science and religion. Over the centuries, Albert was celebrated for his magic, or it was explained away—but he was never condemned. Dignified Retreat is a panoramic study of the vibrant literary and intellectual culture that emerged in early seventeenth-century France following the devastating Wars of Religion. This was a period that not only witnessed the recovery of the country following these wars, and the emergence of a strong, 'absolutist' monarchy under the Bourbons, but also the rise and refinement of the French language and the development of a literary culture that would soon be known as French classicism. Casting his net over a wide range of writers and intellectuals, Robert A. Schneider has assembled a roster of more than 100 men and women of letters, those constituting what he calls the 'generation of 1630'. While diverse, and indeed divided between those who hewed to traditional humanism and others more attuned to 'modern' linguistic and literary developments, this cohort largely shared a commitment to a cultural renewal of France, its rise to prominence in the geopolitical arena of Europe, and the emergence of a strong centralized monarchy. They depended on both the traditional aristocracy and the king's powerful minister, Cardinal Richelieu. But despite this dependency, these writers and intellectuals maintained a degree of independence and, more significantly, were the prime movers in crucial cultural developments that are too often identified with royal initiatives. For example, the author demonstrates that the Académie française, founded in 1635 by Richelieu, often considered formative in French cultural history, was actually more the result of the creative initiatives of these men of letters, which the savvy Cardinal only managed to co-opt and turn to the purposes of the crown.

This volume is the translation of "Dall'età cartesiana a Brucker", the second volume of the multi-volume work "Storia delle storie generali della filosofia". From the fall of Constantinople in 1453 until the eighteenth century, many Western European writers viewed the Ottoman Empire with almost obsessive interest. Typically they reacted to it with fear and distrust; and such feelings were reinforced by the deep hostility of Western Christendom towards Islam. Yet there was also much curiosity about the social and political system on which the huge power of the sultans was based. In the sixteenth century, especially, when Ottoman territorial expansion was rapid and Ottoman institutions seemed particularly robust, there was even open admiration. In this path-breaking book Noel Malcolm ranges through these vital centuries of East-West interaction, studying all the ways in which thinkers in the West interpreted the Ottoman Empire as a political phenomenon - and Islam as a political religion. Useful Enemies shows how the concept of 'oriental despotism' began as an attempt to turn the tables on a very positive analysis of Ottoman state power, and how, as it developed, it interacted with Western debates about monarchy and government.
