Il Περὶ ἑπτὰ θεαμάτων è l'unico trattato sulle sette meraviglie che ci sia giunto dall'antichità. Il solo testimone che ne tramanda il testo - il Pal. Gr. 398, celebre testimone appartenente alla cosiddetta "collezione filosofica" - lo attribuisce all'ingenere ellenistico Filone di Bisanzio, attivo fra la metà e la fine del III sec. a.C. Tale attribuzione ha accresciuto, fin dal XVII sec., fama e autorità del trattatello. Tutto indica, tuttavia, che l'autore debba essere considerato tardo-antico, se non addirittura proto-bizantino. Questo volume offre la prima edizione critica del Περὶ ἑπτὰ θεαμάτων, corredata di traduzione, e preceduta da un'ampia introduzione che esplora la tradizione letteraria di cui l'autore si è nutrito, nonché le sorti testuali, il genere, la lingua e lo stile del trattatello, per arrivare a un'ipotesi di datazione. A ciascuna delle meraviglie descritte dall'autore sono inoltre dedicati approfondimenti di carattere storico e letterario, utili a far emergere le peculiarità della prospettiva adottata dallo Pseudo-Filone, e - in alcuni casi - a individuarne le probabili o sicure fonti. A corredo e giustificazione del testo è offerta una discussione dei passi più problematici sotto il profilo esegetico e critico-testuale. Conclude il volume la traduzione latina, sinora inedita, di Lukas Holste (1596-1661).

The Colossus of Rhodes is both the most famous and the least well-known monument of Ancient Greece. Numbered among the Seven Wonders of the World, this bronze statue of the god Helios, thirty-four metres in height, was created by the sculptor Chares of Lindos between the years 295 and 283 BC, only to be destroyed by an earthquake in 227 BC. The legends that have spread after its collapse seem so strange and contradictory that, from an archaeological point of view, it has become a minor and almost neglected object, which specialists in Greek sculpture barely mention in their work. Il Colosso di Rodi, l'enorme statua di bronzo che sorgeva su una piccola isola in mezzo al mare. E ancora, il Mausoleo di Alicarnasso, la monumentale tomba dove riposava il satrapo Mausolo, nell'attuale Bodrum, in Turchia. Il Faro di Alessandria in Egitto, che una volta indicava la via alle mille imbarcazioni che si avvicinavano a quel porto favoloso. E la statua di Zeus a Olimpia, grandiosa creazione del mitico scultore Fidia. Sono queste le Sette Meraviglie del mondo antico. Già indicate come tali diversi secoli prima della nascita di Cristo, furono contemporaneamente visibili solo nel periodo fra il 300 e il 227 a. C.; successivamente andarono a una a una distrutte per cause diverse, salvo appunto l'inattaccabile Piramide di Cheope, scalfita soltanto dalle mani distruttrici degli uomini. Al canone classico Valerio Massimo Manfredi aggiunge la favolosa ipotesi di un'ottava meraviglia, regalandoci il racconto di come sia sorto e di che cosa abbia rappresentato il mausoleo di Commagene, la tomba-santuario del re Antioco, che utilizza come base una montagna intera, alta 2150 metri, nuda, aspra e solitaria: il Nemrut Dagi, nell'Anatolia orientale, vicino al confine con la Siria, la montagna dove secondo il mito Nemrot, il re della torre di Babele, andava a caccia. Lungo pagine avvincenti, dense di racconti favolosi, Valerio Massimo Manfredi si confronta con le massime realizzazioni dell'umanità, e le riporta in vita per noi nel modo più grandioso, raccontandoci i miti e le storie che accompagnarono questi monumenti destinati a entrare nella leggenda. The Malice of Herodotus can perhaps best be described as the world's earliest known book review. But it is much more than that, for in the course of 'correcting' with considerable vituperation what he saw as Herodotus' anti-Greek bias, Plutarch tells us much about his own attitude to writing history. So that together with Lucian's How to Write History (see Lucian A Selection in this series) it forms a basic text for the study of Greek historiography. It is also perhaps the most revealing example of Plutarch's prose style with its rhetorical variety and energy and odd mixture of good and bad argument. But in citing lost works, Plutarch has preserved valuable fragments which don't exist elsewhere and need to be assessed by all students of the Persian Wars.
