A oltre cinquant’anni dalla prima edizione torna in libreria il testo che ha rivoluzionato il pensiero psicoanalitico sulla guerra, opera di uno dei più importanti psicoanalisti italiani del Novecento. Utilizzando il concetto freudiano di inconscio come strumento di indagine, Fornari studia gli aspetti più inquietanti e nascosti nei conflitti armati tra nazioni. Ammesse le motivazioni politiche, demografiche ed economiche generalmente accettate, si pone il problema del perché, nel fenomeno guerra, tali motivazioni si degradino a livello di pure e semplici funzioni distruttive. La risposta della psicanalisi a tale quesito è che la guerra tenta di risolvere angosce psicotiche profonde. In particolare, l’autore scopre nella elaborazione paranoica del lutto una specifica dinamica che permette agli uomini di vivere come normale necessità etica la massima e folle criminalità. Gli uomini hanno avuto forse da sempre la vaga intuizione che la guerra racchiudesse una misteriosa pazzia: la psicoanalisi è però in grado di chiarire e descrivere i meccanismi psicotici specifici in essa coinvolti. Un testo che, a distanza di mezzo secolo, mantiene intatto tutto il suo valore e che, come spiega Massimo Recalcati nella sua nuova prefazione, risulta utile, ora più che mai, come strumento per leggere la realtà di un’Europa nuovamente percorsa dai fuochi bellici.
