Negli ultimi anni l’evoluzione delle tecnologie informatiche ha portato a una modificazione dei processi di comunicazione e di relazione interpersonale. Tuttavia, per comprenderele potenzialità della realtà virtuale è necessario superare la visione strettamente ancorata all’insieme di dispositivi informatici e tecnologici che lacompongono. È invece opportuno rivolgere uno sguardo più approfondito all’insieme di interazioni, processi e risposte cognitive che la realtà virtuale può generare. In particolare, è possibile utilizzare la realtà virtuale per veicolare processi cognitivi complessi e modificare radicalmente le modalità con cui avvengono i nostri processi di conoscenza. A partire da queste considerazioni, il presente volume – che discute anche gli aspetti tecnologicidella realtà virtuale – si sofferma sugli aspetti cognitivi e comunicativi dell’esperienza virtuale. In particolare, attraverso l’analisi del concetto di «presenza», cercherà di analizzare le nuove opportunità offerte dalle esperienze virtuali per l’acquisizione di conoscenza legata all’azione.

En 1851, Arthur Schopenhauer formuló una metáfora que describe la dificultad para encontrar un equilibrio entre la proximidad y la distancia en las relaciones interpersonales. Durante una fría jornada de invierno, varios puercoespines se acercan unos a otros para darse calor y no morir congelados. Mientras más cerca están, más agudo es el dolor que sienten a causa de las púas de los otros. Así, se ven obligados a alejarse, pero pronto el frío regresa y ven la necesidad de volver a acercarse. La oscilación entre ambos sufrimientos se repite una y otra vez. A partir de esta metáfora, Davide Sisto analiza qué sucede en la actualidad con la ampliación de los espacios virtuales, como Facebook, Instagram y WhatsApp: la cercanía y la distancia ya no se formulan solo en términos de presencia física, sino también como proximidad digital y virtual. Si bien durante la pandemia del covid-19 nos vimos obligados a "congelar" nuestros cuerpos dentro de nuestras casas, nunca hemos dejado de interactuar físicamente en el mundo. Hemos compensado la fragilidad de nuestros cuerpos biológicos con la presunta intangibilidad de nuestros cuerpos digitales. Se produjo una verdadera metamorfosis antropológica que nos obliga a pensar de nuevo algunas categorías fundamentales de nuestro imaginario: el vínculo entre el cuerpo y la imagen, lo real y lo virtual, la presencia y la ausencia, el yo y sus múltiples identidades virtuales. En Puercoespines digitales, Sisto se propone demostrar cómo, desde un punto de vista emotivo y psicológico, los cuerpos digitales ejercen una influencia directa sobre nuestro modo de estar en el mundo y nos revelan además que, aunque estemos por completo inmersos en la nueva civilización digital, nunca dejamos de ser puercoespines, entre la necesidad de estar solos y la de estar en compañía.
