La psicologia sociale è lo studio delle dimensioni sociali della mente umana, ossia le modalità di articolazione tra gli aspetti individuali della vita psicologica e il livello della vita sociale, inteso in termini di interazioni tra le persone, ma anche in termini più ampi di contesto socio-culturale: «scegliere come ambito della disciplina non uno dei livelli, bensì l'intersezione tra essi, significa non limitare la scelta degli oggetti di studio ad alcuni temi, ma piuttosto sforzarsi di elaborare un modello di interpretazione che, proprio in quanto tiene conto di entrambi i livelli, risulta applicabile ai fenomeni più diversi. Può così essere impostata in modo più produttivo anche la relazione tra le diverse discipline che si occupano del comportamento umano e in particolare tra psicologia generale, psicologia sociale e sociologia; la distinzione tra esse, infatti, non si pone in relazione ai temi trattati ma al tipo di approccio scelto per interpretare i fenomeni. Ad esempio, tematiche come la percezione, la memoria o le emozioni si possono considerare argomenti di stretta pertinenza della psicologia generale ma diventano oggetto della psicologia sociale quando se ne evidenzi il legame con i processi di interazione e con il contesto socio-culturale. Allo stesso modo, un fenomeno come le dinamiche di gruppo costituisce un tema di evidente interesse sociologico per tutto ciò che riguarda aspetti come l'interdipendenza e la differenziazione, i rapporti di potere, i sistemi di norme, la stratificazione sociale ecc.; mentre diventa oggetto di studio della psicologia sociale laddove si considerino i correlati psicologici delle appartenenze, facendo riferimento a temi come l'identità sociale, gli stereotipi, o le cognizioni condivise».
