The tall Tamarin bipeds, tailed and furry, move out from their planet in search of new suitable planets which they can adapt to their needs and then colonize. They study the solar system and discover that Earth is already inhabited by intelligent beings. They erect a communication facility on the Hopi Reservation and send holographic messages to the humans who have gathered around the circular structure. Six of the aliens transport down to Earth and are hosted on the Reservation by two older Hopis, two young scientists and an anthropologist and his two students. The humans communicate in words; the Tamarins, in strings of buzzing sounds. They cannot understand each other and cannot bridge the gap with their sophisticated electronic speech analyzers. The breakthrough is accomplished through the efforts of the two alien children who learn to speak English on their own. The tots are able to effect communication between the two groups, and eventually to teach English to their elders. Interests in music also serve to bind the two groups in friendship. Problems arise when a paranoid senior scientist and a xenophobic general join with a fundamentalist right wing minister to attempt a coup against the Tamarins. The problem reaches a crisis at a UN meeting where the United State President introduces the aliens to the General Assembly. An uprising is quelled, and the United Nations members help the aliens with their colonization problem. Common interests and problems arise that are religious in nature. Resolution involves a trip to Mt. Sinai by our major characters and the undertaking of a trip back to Tamarinoch, the alien home planet.

L'idea di coinvolgere in un'avventura editoriale un gruppo di circa 200 amici è nata in occasione del settantesimo compleanno di Marcello Fagiolo; già allora si stava tuttavia approssimando una data ben più importante di quella anagrafica: i cinquant'anni di studi, tanti sono quelli intercorsi dalla pubblicazione del primo suo libro Funzioni, simboli e valori della Reggia di Caserta (1963). Chi ha conosciuto Marcello Fagiolo da allievo ha avuto modo di apprezzare il Maestro affettuoso, l'amico e confidente sincero, disponibile e sempre pronto ad ascoltare e a elargire consigli, a incoraggiare lo studio e la ricerca, incanalando entusiasmi e ingenuità. A molti giovani egli ha trasmesso la passione per lo studio, l'onestà nella ricerca, la curiosità, l'esortazione a non accontentarsi di risultati facili, il coraggio di essere audaci anche in assenza di certezze. A giovani e a meno giovani ha dimostrato che è fondamentale il rispetto del lavoro di ognuno, il confronto di idee e metodi diversi; ha insegnato che il “grande libro dell'architettura” è immagine e compendio del “grande libro del mondo” e che è affascinante instaurare relazioni con contesti diversi a volte lontani nel tempo e nello spazio, evidenziando non tanto differenze e punti di rottura quanto continuità e analogie; che non basta saper vedere l'architettura ma è necessario saperla anche leggere, senza costringerla entro confini disciplinari netti; un'architettura fatta di simboli e di allegorie, di ordine e dis-ordine, di effimero ed eterno, di caos e di armonia delle sfere. Molti lo hanno seguito nell'intrepida costruzione di “Atlanti” di saperi. Marcello Fagiolo è stato un esempio di passione per la scrittura e di amore per il libro, seguito con trepidazione nel suo farsi, fino all'esito finale; un metodo di lavoro che ha applicato anche nella organizzazione di importanti mostre, di grandi e innovativi progetti di ricerca, di convegni internazionali e di corsi di alta cultura.
