Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Philosophie der Antike, Note: 1,0, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (Philosophisches Seminar, Lehr- und Forschungsbereich II), Veranstaltung: Anthropologische Modelle in Antike und Mittelalter: Platon, Aristoteles und Albertus Magnus, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In der Diskussion um Psyche, Psychologie, Selbstbewusstsein und Individualität, allesamt Worte, die unsere Zeit gerne gebraucht, taucht der Begriff Seele, obwohl die direkte Übersetzung des griechischen Wortes psyche, in wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen kaum auf. Die Vorstellung einer selbständigen Geistseele, die mit dem lebendigen Körper eine wie auch immer geartete Verbindung eingeht, erscheint der Wissenschaft kaum mehr erörterungswürdig. Vielmehr scheinen Vorstellungen von Seele restlos in den Bereich der persönlichen Religiosität zu gehören. Platon und Aristoteles erheben jedoch den Anspruch, dem Problem der Seele mit den Mitteln der Wissenschaft näher zu kommen. Beide entwerfen unterschiedliche Modelle und Erklärungen der Seele. In Platons Psychologie begegnet uns ein strenger Dualismus von Seele und Leib, den er in mythischen Gleichnissen veranschaulicht. Die Herangehensweise des Aristoteles unterscheidet sich grundlegend. Als Biologe und Naturwissenschaftler lehnt er einen Leib-Seele Dualismus ab und entwirft als Gegenmodell den Hylemorphismus. In dieser Arbeit sollen beide Ansätze genauer betrachtet werden. Die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Leib und Seele steht dabei im Vordergrund. In einer Kontrastierung sollen die Unterschiede und Eigenheiten der beiden Psychologien besonders herausgearbeitet werden. Zwei Fragestellungen werden hierbei besonders berücksichtigt: Was ist der Mensch bei Platon, was bei Aristoteles und wie stehen die Begriffe Mensch und Seele in Beziehung? Welche Bedeutung hat das logistikon bei Platon und welche der nous bei Aristoteles für die Identität des Menschen?

In German Romanticism, the imagination is the site of the encounter between the subject and its environment; this book examines that encounter. Dealing with both literary and philosophical texts, it argues that the Romantic imagination performs a critique of rationalism. In reflecting on the fragmentary, the Romantics require the reader to both imagine and to question this as a hermeneutic process. As such, they understand writing to be an experiment in memory, both individual and cultural. This book is a study of the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Novalis, Tieck and also of the utopian project of Romanticism itself. Methodologically, it is informed by what Foucault termed the archaeological approach to discourse as well as by psychoanalysis and literary theory. Examining points of contact as well of divergence between Kantian epistemology and Romantic nature philosophy, it also highlights the correspondences between literature, philosophy and science. Above all, it treats Romanticism as an experiment in the portrayal of ambivalent modern identity.

This book argues that Plato's Charmides presents a unitary but incomplete argument intended to lead its readers to substantive philosophical insights. Through careful, contextually sensitive analysis of Plato's arguments concerning the virtue of sophrosyne, Thomas M. Tuozzo brings the dialogue's lines of inquiry together, carrying Plato's argument forward to a substantive conclusion. This innovative reading of Charmides reverses misconceptions about the dialogue that stemmed from an impoverished conception of Socratic elenchus and unquestioned acceptance of ancient historiography's demonization of Critias. It views Socratic argument as a tool intended to move its addressee to substantive philosophical insights. It also argues, on the basis of recent historical research, a review of the fragments of Critias' oeuvre and Plato's use of Critias in other dialogues, that Plato had a nuanced, generally positive view of Critias. Throughout, readers are alerted to textual difficulties whose proper resolution is crucial to understanding Plato's often abstract arguments.

The concept of the soul, one of the greatest 'inventions' of Greek philosophy, which crossed the whole history of the Western civilisation, was defined in its fundamental philosophical features by Plato. Developing the numerous issues naturally linked to this concept, Plato's thought does not only focus on metaphysical and religious themes, but also to all issues related to spirituality and the human psyche, including their ethical consequences. Therefore, the concept of soul opens the door to an endless process involving the analysis of a subject's interiority. It is not by chance, that this Platonic theme recurs in many texts and even represents the backbone of whole dialogues. In this collection, some of the most important contemporary Platonic scholars looked at these complex philosophical issues from innovative perspectives, especially with regard to texts that previously were either underestimated or largely ignored.
