Many people seek help because they feel dragged down by a sense of inner deadness that persists in an otherwise full and meaningful life. These individuals somehow remain untouched by their own inner experiences; a deadness persists that can cripple their entire life or part of it. This book shows what is involved in enduring and working with psychic deadness in a day-to-day, session-by-session basis.

Equal to the Madness: Countertransference Intensive Psychotherapy for Psychosis is among the first books of its kind to offer a semistructured psychoanalytic treatment for schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. Grounded in contemporary psychoanalytic theory, with a strong focus on Wilfred Bion’s seminal contributions to the treatment of psychotic states, this book presents a model for working with psychotic patients that emphasizes the key role of countertransference in understanding the patient and producing change. It addresses all the most important areas of treatment in one volume, presenting clinicians with comprehensive theory and technique for providing effective and thoughtful care to psychotic patients. Equal to the Madness was researched using an intuitive process of “distillation and matching,” a means of selecting and identifying the common elements in treatment from diverse psychoanalytic literature spanning more than one hundred years. It effectively condenses, synthesizes, and streamlines much of psychoanalytic thinking on psychosis into an easy-to-access treatment compendium. The result is an explicit, well-articulated approach to psychotherapy that is sufficiently organized to be useful as a treatment manual, giving clinicians a reliable framework for intervening with psychotic patients. Equal to the Madness is didactic and applied in addition to theoretical. It offers basic instruction to those who are just learning about the treatment of psychosis for the first time but is far-reaching enough to be helpful to more seasoned professionals. It provides clinicians with information related to assessment, intervention, and therapeutic strategies tailored specifically for psychotic patients. Rich case materials illustrating important concepts are included to reinforce learning. Equal to the Madness is a foundational resource for mental health care providers that delivers an instrumental learning experience.

"Ecstasy is a force to be reckoned with--sometimes creative, sometimes destructive. Eigen argues that there is an ecstasy that comes through the ever-necessary confrontation of our psychic cores with suffering and degradation and he shows that when we can learn to be present with these feelings, they add to the tone and texture of our lives, and help us to feel real."--Page 4 of cover.

Back Cover excerpt Thousands of books have been written about happiness and how to achieve it but these do not consider outer influences from other humans in our life. Of course, all of us would like to be happy and without problems. But many of us have had bad experiences or some sort of problems in our daily life without them having a logical cause or a possible explanation. Some things did not go as expected despite all of our efforts. We are sometimes victims of unforeseen accidents. We sometimes are also unable to reach our foreseen immediate goals which previously were considered very simple even though we were fighting hard to achieve them. We do not know why these events occur but most people attribute it to a possible bad luck' at the time or something which was meant to be'. A second group either by superstition, or rightly sustained, attribute them to a third party's influence that is considered as an evil-eyed' person or bird of ill omen'. A third smaller group attributes causes to premeditated attacks from witches or sorcerers and to have been the target of curses or spells. Negative intentions that could be either normal or enhanced are what we call psychic attacks'. My idea is to give orientation on something undeniable that exists although is blindly rejected by many. Superstitions and myths are analyzed into a logical, rational and partly scientific framework. There are strong cultural differences between people from the western hemisphere and those from the orient, and even between people that speak a common language but are separated by geographical or political boundaries. But when common human reactions and events are observed in several different environments, this makes us think that certain truth should be something underlying as the origin and outcomes of those events.

Freud wrote that the greatest problem facing humanity is its destructive urge. There is no one factor that solves the issue. The Challenge of Being Human explores tendencies that make us up and capacities that try to meet them. The shock of ourselves is perennial. We are challenged by our own aliveness and a need to open doors as yet unknown. We are not done evolving, growing, learning, feeling, caring. Growth of capacity to tolerate and work with experience is part of our evolutionary challenge. This book seeks to support us in whatever ways we can begin to meet this challenge.

Winner of the 2022 Gradiva® Award for Best Edited Book! This book explores the role of bodily phenomena in mental life and in the psychoanalytic encounter, encouraging further dialog within psychoanalysis, philosophy, and the humanities, and contributing new clinical and theoretical perspectives to the recent resurgence of psychoanalytic interest in the body. Presented in six parts in which diverse meanings are explored, Body as Psychoanalytic Object focuses on the clinical psychoanalytic encounter and the body as object of psychoanalytic inquiry, spanning from the prenatal experience to death. The contributors explore key themes including mind–body relations in Winnicott, Bion, and beyond; oneiric body; nascent body in early object relations; body and psychosensory experience; body in breakdown; and body in virtual space. With clinical vignettes throughout, each chapter provides unique insight into how different analysts work with bodily phenomena in the clinical situation and how it is conceived theoretically. Building on the thinking of Winnicott and Bion, as well as contributions from French psychoanalysis, Body as Psychoanalytic Object offers a way forward in a body-based understanding of object relations theory for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists.
