L'objectif général de l'ouvrage est d'étudier les structures et mécanismes nerveux qui sous-tendent le comportement. Une brève introduction rappelle quelques notions récentes concernant les mécanismes élémentaires intervenant au niveau du neurone, de la synapse et de la neuroglie. Une importante partie consacrée à la perception décrit les différents systèmes sensoriels, depuis les récepteurs jusqu'aux projections centrales. L'exposé sur le mouvement présente les données essentielles relatives au contrôle moteur (réflexes spinaux, contrôles sous-corticaux et corticaux, boucles cérébelleuses et striées) en évoquant, à titre d'exemple, la locomotion. On montre ensuite comment les fonctions sensori-motrices et cognitives sont sous le contrôle des cycles de la vigilance ainsi que des processus de l'attention. Les chapitres consacrés aux régulations de la vie végétative et aux émotions abordent les mécanismes cérébraux responsables des réponses adaptatives de base (neurovégétatives, hormonales, immunitaires) et de la perception émotionnelle ainsi que leurs interférences, et initient de la sorte une réflexion à propos des phénomènes psychosomatiques. L'exposé sur les motivations rappelle que le comportement assure également le maintien non seulement de l'homéostasie de l'individu et de l'espèce mais aussi de l'équilibre hédonique. Par ailleurs, les auteurs consacrent une importante section à la plasticité du système nerveux central permettant l'acquisition de nouveaux comportements éventuellement fixés en mémoire. Enfin, le langage, outil de communication et de culture, est approché à travers ses traits spécifiques, les prérequis nécessaires et les mécanismes nerveux mis en œuvre. Les illustrations sont synthétiques et de nombreux encarts complètent l'information de base.
