Reports on joint work by researchers from different theoretical and linguistic backgrounds offer new insights on the interaction of linguistic code and context in language production and comprehension. This volume takes a genuinely cross-linguistic approach integrating theoretically well-founded contrastive descriptions with thorough empirical investigations. Authors answer questions on the topic of how we ‘encode’ complex thoughts into linguistic signals and how we interpret such signals in appropriate ways. Chapters combine on- and off-line empirical methods varying from large-scale corpus analyses over acceptability judgements, sentence completion studies and reading time experiments. The authors shed new light on the central questions related to our everyday use of language, especially the problem of how we construe meaning in and through language in general as well as through the means provided by particular languages.

Incorporating approaches from linguistics and psychology, The Handbook of Psycholinguistics explores language processing and language acquisition from an array of perspectives and features cutting edge research from cognitive science, neuroscience, and other related fields. The Handbook provides readers with a comprehensive review of the current state of the field, with an emphasis on research trends most likely to determine the shape of psycholinguistics in the years ahead. The chapters are organized into three parts, corresponding to the major areas of psycholinguists: production, comprehension, and acquisition. The collection of chapters, written by a team of international scholars, incorporates multilingual populations and neurolinguistic dimensions. Each of the three sections also features an overview chapter in which readers are introduced to the different theoretical perspectives guiding research in the area covered in that section. Timely, comprehensive, and authoritative, The Handbook of Psycholinguistics is a valuable addition to the reference shelves of researchers in psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science, as well as advanced undergraduates and graduate students interested in how language works in the human mind and how language is acquired.

How do we understand what we hear or read? How do we do it when what we hear or read is uncommon, ambiguous, non-canonical, or unexpected? How does being bilingual or suffering from a pathology affect our ability to understand the myriad of linguistic structures around us and, consequently, our ability to use them? This edited volume brings together cutting-edge experimental studies that untangle how speakers with different profiles understand and use linguistic structures of very different natures. The reader will find a detailed overview of the experimental models and techniques that can be applied to their study from a psycholinguistic approach.

Words Meaning And Messages written by Ragnar Rommetveit and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-12 with Social Science categories.

Words, Meaning, and Messages: Theory and Experiments in Psycholinguistics focuses on the advancements of approaches, methodologies, and theories in psycholinguistics. The publication first elaborates on the studies of languages within a general science of signs and the search of psychological design features of natural languages. Discussions focus on characteristic features of sign processes, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of an artificial language, linguistic medium, and characteristic features of psychological inquiries. The text then takes a look at the word as a stimulus and response variable and word meanings, including interdependence among meaning components, associative word meaning, emotive meaning, and preliminary evidence for efferent mechanisms in word perception. The book examines word meanings and nonlinguistic factors in message transmission; different psychological approaches to syntactic processes; and psychological inquiries into the semantic and pragmatic aspects of utterances. Topics include linguistic form and efficiency of message transmission; acquisition of grammar and the learning of word meanings; and word combinations, conditioning, and temporary modification of word meanings. The manuscript is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the theories and experiments in psycholinguistics.

Cognitive Models Of Speech Processing written by Gerry T. M. Altmann and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Computational linguistics categories.

This collection of papers and abstracts stems from the third meeting in the series of Sperlonga workshops on Cognitive Models of Speech Processing. It presents current research on the structure and organization of the mental lexicon, and on the processes that access that lexicon. The volume starts with discussion of issues in acquisition and consideration of questions such as, 'What is the relationship between vocabulary growth and the acquisition of syntax?', and, 'How does prosodic information, concerning the melodies and rhythms of the language, influence the processes of lexical and syntactic acquisition?'. From acquisition, the papers move on to consider the manner in which contemporary models of spoken word recognition and production can map onto neural models of the recognition and production processes. The issue of exactly what is recognised, and when, is dealt with next - the empirical findings suggest that the function of something to which a word refers is accessed with a different time-course to the form of that something. This has considerable implications for the nature, and content, of lexical representations. Equally important are the findings from the studies of disordered lexical processing, and two papers in this volume address the implications of these disorders for models of lexical representation and process (borrowing from both empirical data and computational modelling). The final paper explores whether neural networks can successfully model certain lexical phenomena that have elsewhere been assumed to require rule-based processes.
