Excerpt from Psychological Monographs, Vol. 24 The 1908 scale (7) was quantitative in character owing to the introduction of the concept of mental age. It included a list of 56 tests grouped according to ages from 3 to I 3, each group containing from four to eight tests. Most of the tests of the 1905 series were included, the additions including in a large measure tests of a scholastic nature. The authors gave directions for applying the series and for computing the resultant mental age. A Child testing three years below his chronological age was to be considered defective. Although the scheme of the 1908 series was entirely quantita tive, the authors did not discard the qualitative idea, and they cautioned against the application of the scale in the manner of a measure of height or weight. The border line between the idiot and the imbecile was fixed by the ability to use and compre hend spoken language. The imbecile was differentiated from the moron by the use of written language, illiteracy being di' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Psychological Monographs, Vol. 12 The work presented here grew out of a series of tests upon the rat, begun in April, 1906. Watson, in an investigation which he was carrying on at the time, had found that the only necessary sensory avenues employed by the rat, in learning the maze, were the kinaesthetic and organic, and that visual, olfactory, auditory and tactual impressions could in all probability be dispensed with. The present problem parallels that of the above investigation and may be briefly stated as an attempt to determine the function of the different sense organs in the reactions of the rat to situations requiring various types of movement. In problems like that of the maze, the general activity of running is the one most utilized. The sensori-motor arcs need only to be integrated: Whereas the coordinations which are employed in the learning of such problems as Nos. I, II, and III of the present series (such as digging, bending the back and climbing upward through holes; stepping on a plane and advancing upon it until a trap door falls; raising the head and lifting a latch with the snout, etc.) are not so habitual to the animal. The sensori-motor arcs involved in the learning of these problems must be established more or less de novo, and at the same time be combined into a series which can function more or less automatically. It may be assumed that since running, which is the chief form of activity involved in the maze, is so reflex-like in character, it might well be carried out by the use of kinaesthetic sensory impressions alone. The coordination involved in problems of the manipulation type, not being so reflex in character, would, if the factors involved in the formation of human habits About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Psychological Monographs, Vol. 50 The orchestra conductor has much more material on his score than he can perceive clearly if it is unfamiliar, but he needs to keep dominant in his thinking only important parts of his score, and leave the rest to his players. Even at that his task, so far as reading is concerned, is often quite difficult. How the notes tend to fall into patterns for him, if they do at all, is unknown. The very homogeneity of the college group, brought about by the natural process of the elimination of the unfit, Should have warned us not to expect results comparable to those obtained from children and unselected adults. In 1914 the work was trans ferred to the Psychological Laboratory of the University of Wis consin, where the problem and technique soon took on their final form and where the work was continued until the spring of 1918. A preliminary report containing a description of the gen eral technique and the results from a few subjects was submit ted to the University of Wisconsin as a Master's thesis in 1915. Excerpt from The Psychological Monographs, 1914, Vol. 17 The experiments were con-ducted in the Harvard Laboratory during the years 1911 to 1913. In all, nineteen subjects took part; three of them (a, C and L) continued through the two years' work. Twelve participated in the first year's experiments reported in the first part of this paper, and ten in the second year's experiments reported in Chapter II. All were members of the laboratory and trained in experimental methods. Five (d, F, I, O, and P) were women. Three of these were in the first year's investigation and two in the second. In the first year's experiments on decision the materials used were cards upon which were printed the names of the objects to be decided upon from various points of view. Of these there were forty pairs, fifty groups of three each, and fifty groups of five each.1 The following are some representative examples.
