Excerpt from Mind, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy There were two elements in the system of popular ethics inherited from the last century, which were long thought incompatible with its complete reduction to the form of a physical science. These were the doctrines of free-will and of a moral sense. Each, however, was understood in a way which suggested to the naturalist a ready explanation of its supposed claim to lie beyond his sphere. The moral sense, according to the accepted view, was a specific susceptibility to pleasure or pain in the contemplation of certain acts. What was the quality in the acts which excited this pleasure or pain in the contemplation of them? If it were something in the conception of which any originative function of the reason was implied, then the existence of the moral sense would have meant that there was a determining agent in the inner life of man, of which no natural history could be given. But those writers who had made most of the moral sense had been very indefinite in their account of the quality in action to which it was relative. This is the world of matter in motion which the science Of mechanics attempts to describe to us. It is quite possible to treat of it intelligently without being either psychologist or metaphysician, for one may confine oneself to certain aspects of it without attempting to discuss certain others. When a physicist loosely describes matter as everything that one can touch, ' and then busies himself with the Changes that take place in the world of matter, ignoring all epistemological problems, he confines himself to a definite field of investigation, and the results he Obtains within that field need not be at all vitiated by the fact that he neither raises nor suggests certain other ques tions with which other men busy themselves. Without leaving the plane of the common understanding, he may ask himself whether he is to look upon the material world as through and through a mechanism, or whether he must abandon this concep tion as being unsatisfactory. He has a right to expect that the arguments pro and can will be such as to appeal to men of in telligence who are not devoted adherents of this or that meta physical theory. Excerpt from Psychological Review, Vol. 3 In a paper which I read two years ago before this Associa tion, I endeavored to make clear the nature of the work done by the psychologist, and to set forth the assumptions upon which he must proceed and the method he must employ. I maintained that he must assume the existence of an external physical world, and the existence of certain copies or representatives of it inti mately related to particular bodily organisms. These transcripts of the external world, supplemented by certain elements not supposed to have their prototypes without (feelings of pleasure and pain, etc.) are called minds. I stated that it was the task of the psychologist, with the aid of introspection, observation and experiment, to obtain a knowledge of such minds, and to reduce their phenomena to laws. I held further that, whether we regard mental phenomena as parallel with nervous processes, or as belonging to the same series with them and forming a part of the one Chain, that does not affect the fundamental assump tion of the psychologist, the assumption of an external world and of minds which mirror it, nor does it affect his general method of procedure, the employment of introspection, observa tion and experiment. The extremely hypothetical nature of the ground renders a direct attack hopeless. SO much as this may be ventured, that, if the words expressing a thought are really its constituent parts, it is curious that the same thought can be thought in different words, and even in different languages, and still more curious that the words to fit the thought are not always at hand. Apparently, the same complex may be composed of different elements, and may exist with some of its elements lacking. Further, it is curious to re ect that these verbal images in the background must somehow be present simultaneously and yet in proper sequence, since otherwise they might compose quite a different thought or no thought at all. Excerpt from Psychological Review, Vol. 4 My statement that I am concerned with the self as knower and not directly with the empirical self commonly said to be known' needs a word Of explanation, and this I may insert here, though I think my meaning will be made sufficiently clear during the course Of my address. I am interested in the ques tion Of what knowledge means in psychology, and I discuss the self as the accepted subject of the act of knowing. Of course, any light which may be cast on the nature of knowledge will help to make clear what is meant by speaking of anything as known, ' and will help us to a better comprehension Of the em pirical' self in so far as it is a something known. Moreover, since the self as knower and the self as known have been and are generally very loosely distinguished from one another and even declared identical, it will be impossible for me to confine myself strictly to the self as knower. I must take the self as I find it, vague, ambiguous, inconsistent, and must simply try to come to some conclusion about its knowing' function. SO much for my aim. I shall try to remain so far as possi ble on psychological ground in my discussion, although the matter is, as I have said, also of interest to the epistemologist. One approaches such a theme, in the presence Of this critical audience, with a certain reverent hesitation, and would gladly pour out a libation, praying, as did Plotinus, for the gift Of cor rect discernment.
