Est-il imaginable que la psychanalyse soit demeurée indemne du désastre engendré par le nazisme ? Outre l’émigration d’Est en Ouest de ses foyers vivants et la profonde modification du milieu d’origine de cette pensée et de cette pratique, l’atteinte provoquée par l’implacable bouleversement du socle culturel et langagier sur lequel reposait la théorie psychanalytique donne lieu tout d’abord à l’émergence d’une lutte pied à pied contre les fondements biologiques de l’identité et la « naturalité » de la race et du sol prôné par le nazisme. Puis, cette lutte laisse la place à un mouvement qui associe progressivement l’humanisation de la méthode, l’intersubjectivisme et la co-narrativité. L'accusation met en évidence la dimension particulièrement atroce des expérimentations médicales réalisées sur des êtres humains dans les camps de concentration. Il s'agit du fondement même du nazisme et de sa prétention à ériger un autre code de comportement que celui que les hommes ont finalement privilégié, au moins à titre d'horizon souhaitable, dans nos sociétés de liberté et de démocratie. Les questions d'ordre éthique soulevées par les experts médicaux de l'accusation et les réponses qu'ils ont apportées aux arguments des accusés et de leurs avocats constituent une réflexion qui est à l'origine du Code de Nuremberg. Elle sera poursuivie et approfondie un an plus tard dans la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme, puis par la suite dans la Déclaration d'Helsinki qui énonce les " Principes éthiques applicables aux recherches médicales sur des sujets humains ". Le Code de Nuremberg, dont la portée historique est fondamentale sur le plan juridique et médical, définit la légitimité des expériences médicales et le statut des personnes participant à une expérimentation. Il annonce ainsi la naissance de la bioéthique moderne.

In fact, the perpetrators of genocide had a powerful sense of right and wrong, based on civic values that exalted the moral righteousness of the ethnic community and denounced outsiders. Claudia Koonz's latest work reveals how racial popularizers developed the infrastructure and rationale for genocide during the so-called normal years before World War II.
