This book is my next research in the field of the historical psychology of the Russian people. Works of this kind often appeared a hundred or more years ago. However, since then the Russian people first became Soviet, and now they are generally called "Rossians." Studying of Russian people has become much more difficult due to the blurring of the ethnic national composition. National traits have been erased. Together with their education, their internationalism and craving for a good life increased. In such conditions, people have not much enthusiasm to establish their Russian national identity.By now, Russia is still a not completely civilized country, barbaric in places, but pretending to be a modern democratic one. As a result, like a hundred, and two hundred, and three hundred years ago, the Russians face the question: "What will happen to us?" Either the irreplaceable despotic leadership, or the split of the elites, or the stagnation and decay of the country, or the war and revolution to raise the people's spirit. Everything in the country is shaky and uncertain. Any laws and even the current Constitution can be changed tomorrow at the request of one person, in accordance with his ideas about good and bad, about necessary and unnecessary.The specified management scheme of the Russian ethnos tends to reproduce itself from generation to generation. Even if conditions appear for changing this scheme, this management model, they cannot be fully implemented. Having found themselves within the framework of a despotic sociocultural model of management, the Russian people and the entire Russian ethnos cannot get out of it. Conservative tradition and harsh lifestyle prevent him from doing this.

The basic factor distinguishing Soviet psychology is that it views phenomena from the perspective of a highly articulated body of theoretical assumptions, and rejects the inductive ‘eclecticism’ of Western psychology. The theoretical framework within which Soviet psychology functions is the product of a distinctive socio-political and cultural development in Russia profoundly shaped by the institutions of autocracy and Orthodox religion, and the economic system of serfdom, and the radical revolt which grew up in opposition to this and advocated materialism, secularism, and atheism. The opening of the former Soviet Union to the West has provided an opportunity to describe Russian human factors/ergonomics and to compare American theories and methods with it. Although this book is principally dedicated to describing the theory of activity as it applies to issues of design and training, it is also offered to a general audience of psychologists and interested lay readers. This theory studies the goal-directed behavior of man and attempts to integrate the cognitive, motivational, and behavioral aspects of activity into a holistic system. Such fundamental notions as goal, action, and self-regulation are described and analyzed from totally different theoretical points of view. This is the first comprehensive, systematic description of the theory of activity in the English language. Existing attempts to translate the theory of activity into English suffer from certain limitations. Among them, the theory of activity -- considered one of the more important accomplishments of Soviet psychological science -- has an extensive history dating back to the work of Vygotsky and his students. Subsequent development of the theory by other well-known Soviet psychologists and psychophysiologists took place within different schools with some significant differences. In the former Soviet Union, psychological theory could not be advanced unconnected to Marxist-Leninist ideology. Accordingly, theoretical formulations were subject to their own version of "political correctness." Books published in this field were addressed only to other scientists with backgrounds in the field. Moreover, the translation of the technical terms in Russian psychology frequently resist translation in the absence of the context of the debates in which they were being used. Thus, simple translation of books in this field as they were written in a specialized and politicized environment for Russian audiences is really not a particularly sensible or worthwhile undertaking. This book is addressed in the first instance to Western psychologists. It compares, among other things, analyses of work from the former Soviet Union with the work from the West. Applications of activity theory to design and learning were paramount in the Soviet Union. Using their own theoretical perspective, the authors provide a comparative analysis of the various schools working in activity theory. They hope that this book may facilitate the exchange of ideas between Russian psychological scientists and Western psychologists working in ergonomics, human factors, industrial/organizational psychology, education, learning, and related areas where the theory of activity may find general application. This book's authors attempt to provide a contribution not only to science but also to history. Western researchers have strongly influenced Russian work, but because of negative political pressure in the former USSR, the flow of concepts was one-sided. Russian ergonomists received so much from American and Western sources that it is now important to give something back. Despite the considerable similarity between Russian and American theories and methods, the special "spin" the former put on their work may stimulate new thinking on the part of their American colleagues.

I began to think about president Vladimir Putin as an object of psychological description, when I saw the huge role that this little-known person of the 90s began to play in the fate of the country. Without the name "Putin," nothing serious can be done in Russia now. State plans, decisions, meaningful events are impossible without his presence and stamp of approval. Looking at the TV screen, you might get the impression that he works alone in Russia. Those around him act merely as an extension of his power. For the Russian citizen, it is very difficult to get through the images of Putin shown by TV and the state media. The Russian press creates its own image, the Western press creates their own image, mainly the opposite of the former. The first image has him in a positive light, the second has him cast in a negative light. At the same time, the personal psychological problems and complexes of politicians, journalists and analysts, as well as problems of the Russian economy and politics, all bear on the image of this person. This book is about what a boy from a Leningrad yard made of himself and what the limits of his possibilities are. To live up to his own image of a strong president, he deliberately selects into his circle weak people who cannot compete with him. He gets rid of strong colleagues. It was in his youth when Putin gathered friends in the yard who were weaker than he was, more like pawns in his strong-willed plan. He liked to experiment with himself and with the people he commanded. Of course, sometimes his command was unsuccessful. Little by little he improved his management and leadership skills. But he could not avoid loss of human lives - civilian and military. Like any politician, Putin must step over the corpses of soldiers who sacrifice their lives as their duty in the name and for the good of Russia. Sometimes his actions have threatened civilian lives. This raises the question of the price of a human life. There are two Putin personalities who live and govern Russians - one popular, written in the pages of his loyal subjects and followers, and the other - the real one, which can be characterized by his actions only. For most Russian people the second, real Putin is not needed. A beautiful picture of their president is enough for them. Therefore, pro-Putin authors avoid the slippery moments when his behavior and his real personality become apparent. Many details have been smothered from his biography, and this makes it difficult to accept him as a living, whole person.
