The peri-menopause is emerging more and more as a subject for study by the doctor, the psychologist, the social worker, the gerontologist, the clinical chemist, the public health specialist, the sociologist, the psychiatrist and the experimental pathologist. The results of studies are gradually becoming known to the public, particularly to the prospective clients, ageing women. Women have begun to ask for treatment and they will most likely determine whether oestrogen replacement therapy comes into vogue. Psychosomatics in peri-menopause is an important sub ject, since the life-span of the woman has extended to nearly twice that of her fertile period. The life-expectancy for women in industralized countries is now some 70-75 years. This means that most can now expect to spend one third of their lives in the post-menopause. Consequently, there is now much more time than before in which to notice, experience and be bothered by peri menopausal changes. Moreover modern medicine has much more to oner than mere moral support to sufferers from ailments connected with progressing ovarian failure during peri-menopause. Although we cannot promise eternal youth - as Wilson does -there are more possibilities for treatment than 10 years ago.

This book had its origins In a conference, organised by the Scottish Assocation for Behaviour Modification (SABM), which took place from September 29th to October 2nd, 1980 in Pitlochry, Scotland. The SABM was founded in the early 1970s to fulfil a teaching need and provide a forum at conferences in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland at which mainly clinical psychologists from Scotland and North-West England could discuss research. There have been four such major conferences over the years and the common feature has been the highlighting of research issues mainly in behavioural psychology. At the 4th conference (Pitlochry, 1980), the general emphasis was on the assessment and treatment of chronic illness, although a number of other individual papers were presented. Chapters 4, 5, 8, 10 and 11 are based on papers from the full-day symposium on clinical psychology and physical illness (to which general medical practit ioners were invited), although Chapter 8 in particular comprises a much wider review paper than the original conference paper; and Chapter 13 is also a much extended version of a paper accepted for, but not presented at, the conference. Chapters 15, 16, 18 and 19 are based on papers comprising the symposium on behavioural approach es to the care of the long-stay psychiatric patient. Chapters 2 and 3 are based on invited individual papers presented at the conference. At the request of the publisher, additional material was commissioned.

Margaret Lock explicitly compares Japanese and North American medical and political accounts of female middle age to challenge Western assumptions about menopause. She uses ethnography, interviews, statistics, historical and popular culture materials, and medical publications to produce a richly detailed account of Japanese women's lives. The result offers irrefutable evidence that the experience and meanings—even the endocrinological changes—associated with female midlife are far from universal. Rather, Lock argues, they are the product of an ongoing dialectic between culture and local biologies. Japanese focus on middle-aged women as family members, and particularly as caretakers of elderly relatives. They attach relatively little importance to the end of menstruation, seeing it as a natural part of the aging process and not a diseaselike state heralding physical decline and emotional instability. Even the symptoms of midlife are different: Japanese women report few hot flashes, for example, but complain frequently of stiff shoulders. Articulate, passionate, and carefully documented, Lock's study systematically undoes the many preconceptions about aging women in two distinct cultural settings. Because it is rooted in the everyday lives of Japanese women, it also provides an excellent entree to Japanese society as a whole. The Study of Women In Midlife GRACE K. BARUCH AND JEANNE BROOKS-GUNN To describe the middle years-that relatively long span when one is neither young nor old-as a neglected period may no longer be accurate, given current scientific and popular interest in adult development and aging. But midlife is still too often seen merely as a kind of staging area on the way to old age, when one gathers one's forces and tries to stock up on assets-health, money, relationships-that will be needed for the rigors of the last phase of life. The middle years have been characterized more as a transition period than as a time of growth, satisfaction, and creativity. As this volume will show, although midlife is not without its difficulties, it is, for many women, a time of unexpected pleasure, even power. MAJOR THEMES A central theme of this volume is the impact of social change. The influence of economic conditions, of ideology, of the normative timing of such life events as age of marriage and childbearing, are addressed in many chapters from hlany different perspectives. Social changes are shown to have both negative and positive consequences. On the nega tive side, for example, the sex differential in life expectancy is a biosocial phenomenon that greatly restricts the availability of sexual partners-or, more precisely, heterosexual partners-for older women.
