The simplistic explanation of psychotherapy is that it deals with the treatment of disorders of emotion or personality by psychological methods. Formerly, this was the treatment of disease by psychic or hypnotic influence. As the profession of psychotherapy is now established, the treatment of emotional or behavioural problems by psychological means, often in one-to-one interviews or small groups, is now the accepted norm.Following six years of training and about fifty years of practical experience using the few established specialties of treating people, since retirement I came to the realisation that the amount of branches in the fields of psychotherapies, psychology, counselling, medical and psychiatric treatments; the schools of ideas are innumerable.Whether this is a blessing for the patients, clients and the sufferers (because they have an abundance of choices), or perhaps a confusing anathema, it is up to the practitioners and the recipients by collaborating to choose the appropriate therapeutic sessions; which hopefully will suit the individual clients of all ages. There are cases where treatment is not enough and the training and or retraining will be sufficient for the clients to learn how to cope with the problems pressurising them. In certain cases the encouragement to develop their talents, follow academic studies, and show them the way of professional portability will improve their chances for suitable careers.By introducing clients and patients to the world of academia, professional portability and continuous self-development, any of these may be the suitable treatment of uncertainty, anxiety, panic attacks and a few other psychological and medical complaints. It is believed that the subject of offering advice, guidance and in general, counselling people in modern times has become a profession in its own right. With this in mind, this book hopes to address an important alternative in treating the homo-sapiens and his/her discomforts in living as an individual and in groups, whatever the choice may be.The contents of this book will still be of importance to the reader and perhaps a training tool for the practitioner of the philosophy of psychotherapy. There is no doubt that this subject is deep and vast. Backed by recent social events and political debating, therapy and its plentiful branches can only be helpful in preparing people to obtain an acceptable style of living and a harmonious mode of interacting and integrating; to live as an entity with his/her own attributes and unique behaviour within a society. In doing so, philosophers have debated the morals, norms, laws, beliefs, religions and logically enough what can be an acceptable pattern of attitudes within the parameters of social tolerance. Through the aeons, practitioners of various established professions have advised and counselled on the upbringing of children and offered guidance in establishing the right relationship between the child, the parents and the state. More recently, analytical philosophies such as the neo-Freudian and Jungian schools established the methods of treating people, based on the classical idealism. People who studied such subjects probably know that Socrates is the father of the method of question and answer. Also, that Sophocles, through his surviving tragedies, is certainly the major contributor to the psycho-analytical Oedipus and Electra complexes and perhaps the biggest influence on Freud, his disciples and their successors. The philosophies of therapeutic methods have been with us since the times of the olden. As such, the reader is encouraged to read further in other books that include the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Hume, Burke, Hegel, Bentham, Mill, Marx and other philosophers of contemporary therapies.

A thought-provoking volume, and one that brings an expanded perspective... Some aspects are unsettling, some frightening, some so distasteful that my reaction is to find another gig should the future be thus. But I did find myself rethinking at idle moments and rereading most of the volume. The works therein contributed to my own perspective. Well worth buying' -"American Journal of Pastoral Counseling "I was admiring of those chapters which took a wide view... This book can be seen as a read-out of a number of attitudes within the profession and within society. Some are partisan or competitive, occupied with the self-justification and proselytizing that is likely to lead to in-fighting. Others see the larger task, the aware repositioning that needs to happen when the world is moving on... this is a book worth reading for the depth and the width of much that is written in it, and not just as a hologram of the present state of the profession. Many contributors give evidence of the self-examination, the awareness of the environment, the largeness of vision and the strictness with self that are prerequisites for humility and learning. They look cautiously forward, both to what might be reached through the profession's best work, and to the reductionist, production-line future that might be a worst outcome of regulation, of confluence and complacent self-interest' - "Self & Society "Many authors discuss some common themes for the future... that include increased use of short-term, problem-specific, cost-efficient forms of therapy... all [chapters] were compelling... interesting and readable' - "Contemporary Psychology "From the plethora of counselling books to be found in any reputable bookstore these days, this is one I recommend you to buy. The ten chapters give us a flavour of differing philosophical approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. At the same time they provide a medium where leading exponents in the field can share their experience of practice and give their hunches as to where we may be heading as a profession. It makes for a fascinating read: it describes exciting developments already underway and gives a critique of where some developments have been less than helpful... For anyone training, practising, tutoring or designing training courses I would recommend this as a thought-provoking, timely book' - "Dialogue " A book with many benefits... on reading this book, the reader is made very aware that the psychotherapeutic professions are embedded in a social and political world. Illustrations are plenty and exceptionally well chosen. For example, Holmes highlights how historical events such as the World Wars or the study of communication systems affected the development of psychotherapeutic systems... examples are clear and thoughtfully put' - "British Psychological Society Counselling Psychology Review "The book is enriched by a number of American contributions... I would certainly recommend Palmer and Varma's book as one containing a good cross-section of views about what the millennium holds for counselling' - "Counselling, The Journal of The British Association for Counselling "The contributors are... an eminent and eclectic line-up. Each chapter focuses in one way or another on professional, clinical and philosophical issues and on predictions for the field... this is a stimulating collection of views by experienced therapists. It is thoughtful, often contentious and avoids rose-tinted self-satisfaction... This book contains well-written and important polemical and prophetic material, and all trainees and reflective practitioners would benefit from engaging with the diversity of themes presented by the editors. Arguably, none of us involved in the field can practise with integrity unless we are prepared to question the basis, purpose and future of our work' -"British Journal of Guidance & Counselling "[An] interesting book... Admirably, the authors have completed a difficult task, for predicting the future is not easy, particularly within counselling and psychotherapy where changes are frequent. The ten chapters are well written with insight... Nurses with limited knowledge of the field will find this an easily accessible book, competitively priced and worth the outlay for insights into the possible directions counselling and psychotherapy make take' -"Journal of Community Nursing "Provides vivid and challenging foresight into the different hypothetical paths counselling and psychotherapy may follow' -"Indian Journal of Social Work " In this challenging volume, leading British and American practitioners discuss different aspects of the future for counselling and psychotherapy as they approach the new millennium and establish themselves as professions in their own right. The volume provides a vivid foresight into the different hypothetical paths counselling and psychotherapy may follow. Covering a range of professional, practical and philosophical issues, the predictions are realistic, although not always optimistic. The future of the different and varied counselling approaches is also assessed in terms of which are developing further, and how, and which are likely to become less popular, and why.

The second edition of The Great Psychotherapy Debate has been updated and revised to expand the presentation of the Contextual Model, which is derived from a scientific understanding of how humans heal in a social context and explains findings from a vast array of psychotherapies studies. This model provides a compelling alternative to traditional research on psychotherapy, which tends to focus on identifying the most effective treatment for particular disorders through emphasizing the specific ingredients of treatment. The new edition also includes a history of healing practices, medicine, and psychotherapy, an examination of therapist effects, and a thorough review of the research on common factors such as the alliance, expectations, and empathy.

Whatever else it may be, psychotherapy offers a clear form of human com passion channeled through myriad assumptions about the causes and solu tions of human distress. There has, of course, been a longstanding debate about whether the psychotherapist is best described (and trained) as an artisan or a scientist. Volumes of scholarly argument have also addressed such themes as the essential ingredients of psychotherapy, the role of tech nique, the importance of client characteristics, and the significance of the therapist's personality. Experts have defended a wide range of opinions on these issues and have mustered evidence to support their individual claims. The purpose of the present volume is neither to defend nor to expand any specific claim about psychotherapy. Rather, it is intended to be a heuristic compendium of contemporary views on this humane endeavor. At the most basic level of analysis, the field of psychotherapy research now faces three fundamental questions: 1. Is psychotherapy effective? 2. When and why is it effective? 3. How should psychotherapists be trained? The latter two questions obviously presume that the first can be answered affirmatively. Although I would hardly defend the generalization that all forms of psychotherapy are effective for all clients, it is equally clear that there is now ample warrant for the contention that some of the things we do in our fifty-minute hours seem to have positive effects.
