Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a recognizable, yet misunderstood, condition. Thousands of Soldiers return from the War on Terror suffering from PTSD. PTSD demands understanding. How can the public support our Soldiers when so many suffer from an injury of the mind? How can they help? Affected Soldiers are too often portrayed as violent and erratic, but Dr. Brown knows better. Since 2005, he has treated thousands of Soldiers with PTSD. While there are some exceptions, most of these Soldiers suffer quietly, but fear more terrorist attacks here. PTSD and Me, Healing Injured Minds, tells the stories of these injured heroes. The result is an insightful, poignant exploration of individual lives torn apart by brutal memories. "Some chapters were difficult to read, especially the pages about Jack Scott. I remember those days well; they were rough. I am forever grateful to you, our Heavenly Father and Jack's passion for cycling. All three helped heal him, you being the catalyst and cycling being a therapy of its own, God being a constant companion. Our life is good, not without stress, but we have fun." Soldier's wife As a retired United States Army Reserves Medical Corps Colonel and a psychiatrist, Dr. Robert S. Brown served his country as a Soldier, doctor, and university professor. He graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School and holds a PhD in education. He has forty years of experience in private psychiatric practice and university professorship. He's the author of Textbook for Mental Health. He's won numerous awards, including the Army's Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Life Fellowship of the American Psychiatric Association. Perhaps Dr. Gagon's words, (Former Chief, Behavioral Health, Military Treatment Facility) recounts Dr. Brown's successes best: "You are a wise and caring healer with unbending dedication to the people you serve. I know because each time I hear laughter come from your group room I know someone has let go of their pain and suffering long enough to experience the healing benefits of human connectedness."

Nightmares, anger, fear, flashbacks, guilt, feelings of betrayal, short memory span, forgetful. These are all just a sample of the symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that plague the author and have challenged him since the end of his Vietnam War tour of duty in 1966. The author hopes that, by putting his words on paper and baring his deepest, darkest memories of his PTSD experiences, he can show how his writing has helped him to adjust, cope, and actually control these symptoms. The author and members of the writing group he facilitates at the Loma Linda Veterans Hospital have had some poetry readings at some local California colleges, libraries, and at the Loma Linda Healthcare System in Loma Linda, California. The reaction and acceptance from other veterans in the audiences has given the author a feeling of pride and happiness to see how the veterans are moved by the power of the written word. Each member of the writing group writes, shares, and has control of their own work. Their recovery journey from their writing really shows in the demeanor and actions of each member, and some have also published their own books. Others are still putting together their own books to be published in the future. The author fights through his fear of speaking in front of others and is willing to bare those feelings he writes about just to get other veterans to understand that they are not alone in their pain, and that they are not alone in life. The author feels that he is on his recovery journey, and through this book, he hopes to reach other victims and give them courage to look for professional help in their own journey.

He was taller than me, dressed in black, scary, and I knew he was lying. A few days later, we killed him, but it was okay because it was Vietnam and I was fighting for The United States of America. Thirty years later, he came back to my medical office and tried again to take me out, but this time he was fighting for The United States Department of Justice, I was the enemy, and I was lying. Not all the scars of war are visible and some never heal. Learning that lesson can be painful for all concerned. I hope this story helps us all better understand that combat experiences come home with the soldier and what that can mean.

If this book has reached your hands it's not a coincidence. Maybe the title caught your eye, maybe someone gifted it to you, whatever reason it might be, there's a bigger reason behind it. I want you to know that you're not alone, that you are valuable, and that you deserve to be treated with respect and love. My name is Leigh and I suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) I've been through a lot in my lifetime, and after all these years I felt motivated to write my story and tell the world about what happened to me. When horrific things happen to us, we often tend to think that we are the only ones in the world who are suffering, that no one else will understand our pain. So, one of the reasons that moved me to write my story was that if just one person reads it and feels understood, then this book is so worth it. I want everybody to know that our past does not define us, that we are stronger than we think we are and with a little help, we can overcome anything. For me, it all started when I was a baby. I was born in New Zealand and even though I don't remember my attacker, I have a vivid memory of being molested by the time I was 18 months old. From there I have lived a life that gave me the title of this book: Born to be abused. I was betrayed by the ones closest to me, as well as by strangers in society. Back then it was a different world and I never got justice for what happened to me. Some of the events in this book I have never shared with anyone, but it is time for me to break my silence, so more people out there feel the strength to do it and achieve justice for themselves. My family consists of my parents, my older brother, my younger sister and my baby brother. Warren the oldest is just 18 months older than me. I've been mentally, physically, and sexually assaulted by him. There were many occasions when I thought that he would kill me, days that I was truly afraid for my life and I couldn't do anything about it. I had to continue to live under the same roof as him until he finally left home. It's a real tragedy and injustice when the cause of our abuse is from someone so close to us, it makes us feel like we aren't worthy of love or protection. Most of my life I have been at the mercy of the cruel winds and tides of society. But I'm here to tell you that this isn't the end and that I'm alive and well. And yes, my PTSD takes a mental and physical toll on me most days, but I continue to work on it and it's just Up from here, for you and for me. We got this!Everything you're about to read happened to me in real life, this is not a fiction story. The names and some specific details have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved.
