In this important volume, Graziella Parati examines the ways in which Italian women writers articulate their identities through autobiography - a public act that is also the creation of a private life. Considering autobiographical writings by five women writers from the seventeenth century to the present, Parati draws important connections between self-writing and the debate over women's roles, both traditional and transgressive. Parati considers the first prose autobiography written by an Italian woman - Camilla Faa Gonzaga's 1622 memoir - as her beginning point, citing it as a central "pre-text". Parati then examines the autobiographies of Enif Robert, Fausta Cialente, Rita Levi Montalcini, and Luisa Passerini. Through her discussion of these women's writings, she demonstrates the complex negotiations over identity contained within them, negotiations that challenge dichotomies between male and female, maternal and paternal, and private and public. Public History, Private Stories is a compelling exploration of the disparate identities created by these women through the act of writing autobiography.

United States federal policies created during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries devastated Indigenous nations’ traditions, languages, and identities. The federal policies sought to eradicate Indigenous peoples’ cultures to assimilate them into the dominant society. Indigenous nations like the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho nations in Wyoming adapted and incorporated Western forms of knowledge and methodologies to challenge Western ideas, narratives, and policies. Indigenous nations used federal policies and legal documents to reclaim Indigenous history, narratives, museum spaces, and developed government systems to assert their sovereignty in the twentieth century. Since the origins of ethnology and anthropology during the Progressive Era, Euro-Americans controlled Indigenous narratives on history, cultural artifacts, and objects. In the twentieth century, Indigenous nations have adopted Western methodologies when developing tribally owned cultural centers that allowed Native Americans to protect, create, and control their history, objects, and artifacts. Traditionally, Indigenous nations value oral stories because they are essential to Indigenous culture. Indigenous oral stories are private narratives held among kin groups in private spaces. Oral stories sustain communities, ceremonies, languages, and identities. Stories highlight the complexity and value of stories passed from one generation to the next. Oral narratives connect Indigenous peoples to the past, present, and future. While private narratives remain protected, this research highlights how Indigenous nations challenged, adapted, and adopted Western policies and methodologies to reclaim historical narratives, create tribally-owned spaces, and develop a unique government system to achieve Indigenous sovereignty.

The female Bildung narrative has acquired an important position in twentieth â " and twenty-first century literature through its continuing depiction of female self-discovery and emancipation as a process of negotiating the traditional divisions of female and male roles in relation to the private and public spaces. Recognizing the seminal contribution of feminist criticism to the definition of the genre and the role of feminist cultural processes in its thematic developments, this volume investigates more recent influences on the female Bildung narrative and the influence of the classic female Bildungsroman on contemporary cultural texts. As a collection of fifteen essays written by international scholars, the book offers a representative sample of the narratives of female development, presenting a variety of genres, including the novel, the short story, autobiography, TV series, and Internet video blogs, and theoretical frameworks, adopting hermeneutic, postcolonial, feminist, and postfeminist perspectives. The scholarly literature addresses the common practice and effectiveness of using classroom panel presentations by lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) speakers to increase awareness of LGB experiences and to change attitudes. However, little is known about the experiences of the speakers themselves or how the experience may affect the speaker's sense of self or identity. From a narrative as identity perspective, the goal of this study is to learn what effect the repeated telling of a coming out story in a public setting may have on the teller's identity, the story they tell, and the meanings and feelings associated with the coming out story. To examine this phenomenon, the experiences of gay male panel participants were explored. Initial in-person and follow-up in-person or phone interviews were conducted with ten participants who self-identified as gay males (not transgender), took part on LGB classroom panels as undergraduates for at least one semester, and had completed at least one semester of higher education. Interview questions were designed to elicit rich descriptions of the panel experience with attention to how the experience affected the participant and the coming out story being told. A phenomenological approach to data analysis was used to capture the essence of the panelist experience by identifying common themes and elements. An important contribution of this study is that it provides information about the panelist experience. Panelists identified several essential aspects of their experience including: a strong desire to make it easier and safer for others to come out, a high level of dedication and enthusiasm for being on panels, an opportunity for self reflection and personal growth, recognition of the therapeutic aspects of the experience, and a connection with the gay community. The repeated telling of the coming out story seems to have a number of effects: a refining effect that clarifies the coming out experience and how the story is told, a labeling effect from listening to others tell their stories, a strengthening effect for identity, and a connecting effect to the gay community. The findings suggest direct implications for panel programs as well as directions for future research.

Hannah Arendt argued that the “political” is best understood as a power relation between private and public realms, and that storytelling is a vital bridge between these realms—a site where individualized passions and shared perspectives are contested and interwoven. Jackson explores and expands Arendt’s ideas through a cross-cultural analysis of storytelling that includes Kuranko stories from Sierra Leone, Aboriginal stories of the stolen generation, stories recounted before the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and stories of refugees, renegades, and war veterans. Focusing on the violent and volatile conditions under which stories are and are not told, and exploring the various ways in which narrative reworkings of reality enable people to symbolically alter subject-object relations, Jackson shows how storytelling may restore existential viability to the intersubjective fields of self and other, self and state, self and situation.

This book considers the largely under-recognised contribution that young writers have made to life writing genres such as memoir, letter writing and diaries, as well as their innovative use of independent and social media. The authors argue that these contributions have been historically silenced, subsumed within other literary genres, culturally marginalised or co-opted for political ends. Furthermore, the book considers how life narrative is an important means for youth agency and cultural participation. By engaging in private and public modes of self-representation, young people have contested public discourses around the representation of youth, including media, health and welfare, and legal discourses, and found means for re-engaging and re-appropriating self-images and representations. Locating their research within broader theoretical debates from childhood and youth studies: youth creative practice and associated cultural implications; youth citizenship and autonomy; the rights of the child; generations and power relationships, Poletti and Douglas also position their inquiry within life narrative scholarship and wider discussions of self-representation from the margins, representations of conflict and trauma, and theories of ethical scholarship.
