La institución política principal que la Corona española introdujo en la administración de todos los pueblos autóctonos fue llamada la republica de indios. Para su estudio no son suficientes las obras generales acerca del régimen colonial español que representan todavía la perspectivaOficial de la impresionante expansión del dominio español al continente americano. En ellas, la vida de los autóctonos apenas aparece; los indios quedaban en el anonimato, como meros números tributarios, porcentajes en la catástrofe demográfica o simples objetos de evangelización. Las repúblicas de indios casi no se mencionan en las historias generales de la época colonial, a pesar de que fueron instituidas en su momento como último eslabón indispensable para completar, a nivel local, el sistema de control oficial. Además, estas republicas constituyen el origen de municipios hoy día existente en nuestro país. En este libro la autora se propone analizar a las repúblicas de indios dentro del contexto de la conflictiva sociedad colonial y en su proceso histórico. Para ello es necesario por un lado, comprender hasta donde sea posible, las formas de organización política vigentes en una región antes de la llegada de los españoles, y por el otro, también hay que estudiar por que el Estado dispuso que fuesen establecidas y por qué lo hizo hasta después de medio siglo de experimentos con diversas formas institucionales. Se desea presentar aquí un texto legible y por ello a veces más narrativo que analítico, que sea comprensible sin necesidad de recurrir a las notas que se dirigen solo a especialistas que desean utilizar las fuentes utilizadas o tesis impugnadas. En la medida que los documentos lo permiten, se pretende superar los anonimatos de las instituciones y llegar a un encuentro con individuos reales, con nombre y personalidad, sean indígenas, colonos, frailes o funcionarios españoles a quienes les tocó vivir los conflictos de aquella compleja sociedad colonial
