This book examines the contemporary art world in Latin America from an anthropological perspective and recognises the recent reconfiguration of Lima's art scene. Giuliana Borea traces the practices of artists, curators, collectors, art dealers and museums, identifying three key moments in this reconfiguration of contemporary art in Lima: artistic explorations and new curatorial narratives; museum reinforcement and the strengthening of Latin American art networks; and of the rise of the art market. In so doing, Borea highlights the different actors that come into play in activating and de-activating directions and imaginations. The book exposes the practices of the local, the global, indigeneity and politics in the arts, and reveals that the strengthening of the Lima art scene has fostered the expansion of dominant art views and formats mobilised by transnational elite actors. Featuring analytical chapters interspersed with personal stories, Borea's book presents an in-depth analysis of a specific art scene to open up a new way of understanding contemporary art practices in relation to globalisation, neoliberalism and the city.

Hasta el momento, por lo general, los cuatro elementos —tierra, agua, aire y fuego— se han asociado con bastante frecuencia a disciplinas tales como el esoterismo, la magia, el tarot, libros de autoayuda, etc. Sin embargo, han surgido en los últimos años corrientes humanistas que se han centrado en su estudio desde una perspectiva histórico-literaria. En ese sentido, este manual es una útil herramienta de consulta que puede servir de base para otros estudios aplicados de corte simbólico-literario. El libro se enmarca en esta corriente humanista. En el primer capítulo se muestran los diferentes postulados presocráticos de los que parte la teoría de los cuatro elementos. Una vez trazado el camino que lleva a los cuatro elementos desde la filosofía a la simbología, en el segundo capítulo se expone un estudio sobre el símbolo. Finalmente, los cuatro elementos en la simbología tradicional es la temática del tercer capítulo, en el que se analizan los principales valores y antivalores simbólicos de tierra, agua, aire y fuego, enfatizando así su ambivalencia y la distinta valoración de los mismos en el discurso simbólico tradicional, con el objetivo de conocer el lugar que estos ocupan en la simbología y la literatura.

Surveying the Avant-Garde examines the art and literature of the Americas in the early twentieth century through the lens of the questionnaire, a genre as central as the manifesto to the history of the avant-garde. Questions such as “How do you imagine Latin America?” and “What should American art be?” issued by avant-garde magazines like Imán, a Latin American periodical based in Paris, and Cuba’s Revista de Avance demonstrate how editors, writers, and readers all grappled with the concept of “America,” particularly in relationship to Europe, and how the questionnaire became a structuring device for reflecting on their national and aesthetic identities in print. Through an analysis of these questionnaires and their responses, Lori Cole reveals how ideas like “American art,” as well as “modernism” and “avant-garde,” were debated at the very moment of their development and consolidation. Unlike a manifesto, whose signatories align with a single polemical text, the questionnaire produces a patchwork of responses, providing a composite and sometimes fractured portrait of a community. Such responses yield a self-reflexive history of the era as told by its protagonists, which include figures such as Gertrude Stein, Alfred Stieglitz, Jean Toomer, F. T. Marinetti, Diego Rivera, and Jorge Luis Borges. The book traces a genealogy of the genre from the Renaissance paragone, or “comparison of the arts,” through the rise of enquêtes in the late nineteenth century, up to the contemporary questionnaire, which proliferates in art magazines today. By analyzing a selection of surveys issued across the Atlantic, Cole indicates how they helped shape artists’ and writers’ understanding of themselves and their place in the world. Based on extensive archival research, this book reorients our understanding of modernism as both hemispheric and transatlantic by narrating how the artists and writers of the period engaged in aesthetic debates that informed and propelled print communities in Europe, the United States, and Latin America. Scholars of modernism and the avant-garde will welcome Cole’s original and compellingly crafted work.
