It was being personified and that personification was the devil” Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, Force Commander, United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda 1994 Rwanda, a tiny land-locked central African nation is no stranger to violence. But nothing matched the orgy of killing that engulfed the country in 1994. As the world watched, a genocide not seen since the Hitler horrors of WWII, erupted. Estimates put the toll of those shot and hacked to death at around one million men, women and children. It was into this cauldron of death that a group of Australian peacekeepers, were sent to help alleviate the suffering and bring some order back into shattered lives. For this group of soldiers the daily horrors of their mission were to take on a even more sinister and sickening mantle when they were witness to another massacre a year after the genocide this time at the Kibeho Displaced Persons Camp. On 22nd April 1995 in full view of the Australian peacekeepers, over 4,000 died in a hail of bullets and machete blades at the hands of the Rwandan Patriotic Army. Hamstrung by their UN peacekeeping rules-of-engagement the soldiers could do little to stop the killing. They could only watch the carnage and try, under the gaze of the trigger-happy killers to help the wounded. Pure Massacre is a record of what happened during this peacekeeping mission. Kevin “Irish” O’Halloran, a Platoon Sergeant at the time, stresses the weaknesses of the UN charter and what happens when “good men do nothing”. He pulls together the perspectives of the Australian personnel who served in Rwanda at this time. Pure Massacre gives a new and personal voice to the Kibeho Massacre. It took a special brand of bravery, discipline, compassion and nerve to do what they did. And while no Australian died during and immediately after the massacre at Kibeho their service was not without cost as Pure Massacre testifies, the suffering and tragedy is embedded in their memories.

The intellectual scope and courage to contend with the largest puzzles of human existence and organization distinguish great social thinkers. Barrington Moore's Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy was a foundational work of historical sociology that influenced a generation of social scientists and, decades later, continues to be widely read and taught. Here, Moore takes up the same tools of historical comparison to investigate why groups of people kill and torture each other. His answer is arrestingly simple: people persecute those whom they perceive as polluting due to their "impure" religious, political, or economic ideas. Moore's search begins with the Old Testament's restrictions on sexual behavior, idolatry, diet, and handling unclean objects. He argues that religious authorities seeking to distinguish the ancient Hebrews from competing groups invented, along with monotheism, the association of impure things with moral failure and the violation of God's will. This allowed people to view those holding competing ideas as contaminated and, more important, contaminating. Moore moves next to the French Wars of Religion, in which Protestants and Catholics massacred each other over the control of purity, and the French Revolution, which perfected terror and secularized purity. He then combs the major Asian religions and finds--to his surprise--that violent efforts to eradicate the "impure" were largely absent before substantial Western influence. Moore's provocative conclusion is that monotheism--with its monopoly on virtue and failure to provide supernatural scapegoats--is responsible for some of the most virulent forms of intolerance and is a major cause of human nastiness and suffering. Moore does not say that the monotheist tradition was the primary source of Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, violent Hindu fundamentalism, or ethnic cleansing in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, but he does identify it as an indispensable cause because it justified, encouraged, and spread vindictive persecution throughout the world. Once again, Moore has drawn on his comprehensive understanding of history and talent for speaking directly to readers to address one of the most crucial questions about human past and future. This book is for anyone who has ever heard the word genocide and asked why.

This book explores the political imagination of Eastern Europe in the 1830s and 1840s, when Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian intellectuals came to identify themselves as belonging to communities known as nations or nationalities. Bilenky approaches this topic from a transnational perspective, revealing the ways in which modern Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian nationalities were formed and refashioned through the challenges they presented to one another, both as neighboring communities and as minorities within a given community.
