Reading America written by Matthew Guillen and has been published by Academica Press,LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Is there a unique visual infrastructure that keeps and defines a culture? Professor Guillen discusses a culture built entirely on the visual modality and, most significantly, on that province of the visual we negotiate through the written word. Although this work analyzes features critical to the American legal tradition from its origins in Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence to recent Supreme Court decisions---substantially exploring Judge Scalia's "originalist" movement and Posner's law and economics theories---the presiding agency remains the power of the written language to provide scaffolding to American culture. Writing, it is argued, contours: our worldview, our laws, morality, science, social problems, and affects film, media, broadcasting, comics and literary criticism. The effects of our national formation and the literature that sprung up to discuss the new nation and define its people have directly led to the evolution of our idiosyncratic legal and philosophical perspectives. The title of this work purposely carries a double meaning since it proposes to deal with a "reading of" American culture through its legal and cultural legacy as well as concluding with questions revolving around a well informed American "readership" essential for the preservation of the culture as well as the continued existence of a national collective conscience.

Thomas Pynchon's style has dazzled and bewildered readers and critics since the 1960s, and this book employs computational methods from the digital humanities to reveal heretofore unknown stylistic trends over the course of Pynchon's career, as well as challenge critical assumptions regarding foregrounded and supposedly “Pynchonesque” stylistic features: ambiguity/vagueness, acronyms, ellipsis marks, profanity, and archaic stylistics in Mason & Dixon. As the first book-length stylistic or computational stylistic examination of Pynchon's oeuvre, Thomas Pynchon and the Digital Humanities provides a groundwork of stylistic experiments and interpretations, with over 60 graphs and tables, presented in a manner in which both technical and non-technical audiences may follow.

As teachers well know, the elements that make Thomas Pynchon exciting to read and study—the historical references, the multilayered prose, and the postmodern integration of high and low cultures and science and literature—often constitute hurdles to undergraduate and graduate readers alike. The essays gathered in this volume turn these classroom challenges into assets, showing instructors how to make the narratives' frustration of reader expectations not only intellectually rewarding but also part of the joy of reading The Crying of Lot 49, Gravity's Rainbow, Mason & Dixon, and other Pynchon works, short and long. Like all volumes in the Approaches to Teaching series, the collection opens with a survey of original and supplementary materials. The essays that follow offer an array of classroom techniques: among them, ways to contextualize the novels in their historical settings, from Puritan America through World War II and the volatile 1960s; to use the texts to explore racial and gender politics and legacies of colonialism; and to make Pynchon's elaborate prose style accessible to students. Teachers will also find sample syllabi for courses solely on Pynchon as well as suggestions for incorporating his work into graduate and undergraduate classrooms at a range of institutions.

The first book of criticism devoted to Pynschon's massive 2006 novel, Pynchon's Against the Day: A Corrupted Pilgrim's Guide gathers new work by more than a dozen scholars, offering readings informed by the newest developments in narratology, genre studies, ecocriticism, globalism, and the histories of science and religion. This title also offers fresh perspectives on divisive issues within Pynchon studies, such as anarchism, gender, and reviewers' reception of his recent work. What emerges is a novel that will come to be seen, these essays argue, as a major part of Pynchon's storied legacy and a key work of the "late Pynchon."
