Un giovane scrittore è perdutamente innamorato di Quentina Elizabeth Deveril, detta Q. Q è bellissima, dolcissima, adorabile e, per quanto dotata di un padre arrogante e insopportabile, il matrimonio è vicino e non vi sono ostacoli di sorta alla realizzazione dell’amore perfetto. Tuttavia, poco prima delle nozze, il giovane scrittore riceve una misteriosa lettera che gli chiede di riservare un tavolo per due in un costoso ristorante di Manhattan. Stupito e incuriosito, obbedisce e, giunto all’appuntamento, si trova di fronte un uomo che si presenta come il suo futuro «Sé», il suo «Io» del domani: un sessantenne triste e ingrigito che gli assomiglia in una maniera notevole e che gli intima di non sposare il grande amore della sua vita, la meravigliosa Q. Il motivo? Lui e Q sono ignari portatori di una malattia genetica; i figli che nascerebbero dalla loro unione sarebbero destinati alla morte e il matrimonio a un conseguente naufragio. Lo scrittore scaccia subito dalla mente quel bizzarro incontro e quell’altrettanto bizzarro, e crudele, consiglio, frutto probabile di una burla. Col trascorrere del tempo, però, le parole del sessantenne si insinuano tra i suoi pensieri come un’ossessione ineliminabile. Risultato? Compie quello che mai avrebbe pensato: abbandona la fidanzata. Da quel momento in poi la sua vita cambia completamente direzione, non una ma dieci, cento volte. Altri suoi futuri «Sé», infatti, si susseguono al suo cospetto, convincendolo a sposare un’altra donna, poi a divorziare, a iscriversi alla facoltà di giurisprudenza, poi ad abbandonarla, a viaggiare, a praticare un certo sport e poi a smettere, a mettersi a suonare la chitarra, poi il violoncello, a leggere Proust, ad abbracciare il buddhismo, a studiare l’opera, a eliminare il glutine dalla sua dieta... Tra tutti questi pirotecnici eventi, una sola cosa rimane costante nella personalità dello scrittore: il suo amore per l’indimenticata Q.

At a time when narratology challenges historiographers to differentiate their “emplotments” (White) from literary inventions, this thirteen-essay collection takes a fresh look at the production of historico-political knowledge in literature and the intricacies of reality and fiction. Written by experts who teach in Germany, Austria, Russia, and the United States, the articles provide a thorough interpretation of early modern drama (with a view to classical times and the 19th century) as an ideological platform that is as open to royal self-fashioning and soteriology as it is to travestying and subverting the means and ends of historical interpretation. The comparative analysis of metapoetic and historiosophic aspects also sheds light on drama as a transnational phenomenon, demonstrating the importance of the cultural net that links the multifaceted textual examples from France, Russia, England, Italy, and the Netherlands.
