Human exposure to environmental contaminants is a well-known phenomenon in the Canadian Arctic. The Inuit of Nunavik are exposed to a plethora of toxic substances that are carried from southern to northern latitudes by oceanic and atmospheric transport and biomagnified in Arctic food webs. As the Inuit traditional diet comprises large amounts of tissues from marine mammals, fish and terrestrial wild game, the Inuit are more exposed to metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) than populations living in southern regions. Metals of concern include mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and other contaminants of concern are persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

The main objective of this report is to outline the demographic and social characteristics of the Inuit population who participated in the 2004 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey. Socio-demographic factors are of major significance in determining a population's health. These factors may be interpreted as risk or protective factors in relation to various diseases and should be taken into consideration in planning health services. This theme paper begins by presenting a description of the survey sample and goes on to consider the Inuit's mode of living, including factors such as household composition, adoption and marital status. It then addresses topics related to economic status: education, individual income, occupation and job status. In addition, the subject of personal perceptions of one's own health status is also included in the last section of the paper.

The Inuit way of life and the special relationship they have with animals and the land during traditional activities of hunting, fishing and trapping, result in the Inuit people being highly exposed to pathogenic agents present in the environment and among wild animals. In Nunavik, common practices such as the consumption of untreated water and raw meat, including that of fish and both marine and land mammals, increase the risk of infection by a variety of micro-organisms associated with this environment. There is little documentation concerning zoonotic diseases ? infections transmissible from animals to humans ? among the Inuit of Nunavik. For a number of these diseases, little is known about specific hosts and modes of transmission in the Arctic environment. Additionally, their clinical presentation is often unspecific and can make diagnosis extremely difficult. All of these factors make it difficult to determine the significance of these infections for the population of Nunavik.
