La Química Forense, como la ciencia en general, se basa en el método científico, cuya piedra angular es la observación y la conjetura de hipótesis. Este texto comienza con la definición de conceptos básicos para luego aportar conocimientos sobre las etapas pre-analíticas, analíticas y de interpretación de la información obtenida. Tras estos temas iniciales, se tratan las sustancias controladas y la toxicología forense como muestras físicas o biológicas. Mientras que la determinación de sustancias psicoactivas y sus metabolitos se realiza mediante análisis cualitativos y cuantitativos, el examen de restos de explosivos o incendios, de trazas materiales (fibras, pinturas, vidrios, suelos) y documentos requiere, predominantemente, la obtención de información cualitativa y comparativa. Por ello, después se abordan los temas de incendios, explosivos y residuos de disparo, temáticas interrelacionadas conceptualmente. El tema de incendios cuenta con la valiosa participación de la empresa IST – Investigation Service Technologies que ha aportado múltiples fotografías de once casos reales y su interpretación. Seguidamente se describen ciertos aspectos químico-forenses para el examen de trazas materiales como las fibras, las pinturas, los vidrios y los suelos y, finalmente, el análisis de tintas y papel en documentos cuestionados. En el último tema se reflexiona sobre la transdisciplinaridad implícita en la Química Forense y describe dos temáticas actuales donde es necesario ir más allá del examen, análisis e interpretación de los resultados analíticos. Estas temáticas transdisciplinares persiguen un desarrollo sostenible aumentando la paz y seguridad ciudadana.
