Oggi quasi tutta la riflessione teorica e operativa sulle disabilità riguarda l'età evolutiva. Allo stesso modo, la parte più ricca di interventi a favore dell'inclusione sociale è legata al periodo che precede i 18 anni. I problemi nascono dopo, quando la persona disabile lascia il contenitore scuola per avviarsi progressivamente verso l'età adulta. La persona disabile, in particolare il disabile intellettivo e mentale, viene considerato come un essere senza età, eterno bambino che passa dall'infanzia alla vecchiaia senza mai aver conosciuto la vita sociale e di relazione. Non solo, la persona disabile è anche spesso considerata come asessuata e quindi non autorizzata a desiderare l'amore con una persona dell'altro sesso. Invece, proprio il mondo variegato dei diversamente abili in età adulta e nella fase dell'invecchiamento mette profondamente in discussione il nostro tipo di organizzazione sociale ... In questo testo si troverà un invito a riflettere sulla condizione sociale, psicologica, fisica, culturale dei disabili. Alcuni esperti ma anche alcuni disabili intervengono per dare il loro contributo. È in questo confronto tra lo sguardo di chi lavora da anni con la disabilità (educatori, psicologi, fisiatri, pedagogisti) e quello dei soggetti disabili che può nascere una riflessione critica sulla situazione della disabilità nel periodo successivo all'adolescenza, ma anche sulle possibili proposte per favorire l'inclusione sociale e creare contesti di vita dignitosa (Editore).
