Ce n'est pas un outil de plus dans notre arsenal de classe, mais un outil qui nous amène à repenser la situation éducative, et notre propre action pédagogique. Il nous faut aussi comprendre les stratégies nouvelles d'apprentissage qui se font jour, les processus de découverte et de l'acquisition de l'écrit dans une situation d'autonomie pour l'enfant... C'est une modification de la configuration pédagogique qui nous oblige à nous remettre en question..., dira encore un de nos collègues. Il ne faut pas avoir peur, en effet, de renverser des formules classiques et de prendre des tournants nouveaux ! Mais, n'est-ce pas là le propre de la recherche en éducation ? Comme pour tous les autres ouvrages, ce livre est le fruit d'un long travail d'équipe qui commence sur le terrain. C'est peut-être dans la diversité des situations pédagogiques observées, des échanges, que réside la grande richesse des conclusions communes. Nous y avons associé des recherches entreprises dans des pays étrangers, et remercions ici tous ceux et celles, en France comme ailleurs, qui ont contribué à cet ouvrage.

Deryn Watson CapBIT 97, Capacity Building for Information Technologies in Education in Developing Countries, from which this publication derives, was an invited IFIP working conference sponsored by Working Groups in secondary (WG 3. 1), elementary (WG 3. 5), and vocational and professional (WG 3. 4) education under the auspices ofIFIP Technical Committee for Education (TC3). The conference was held in Harare, Zimbabwe 25th - 29th August 1997. CapBIT '97 was the first time that the IFIP Technical Committee for Education had held a conference in a developing country. When the Computer Society of Zimbabwe offered to host the event, we determined that the location and conference topic reflect the importance of issues facing countries at all stages of developmen- especially Information Technologies (IT) development. Information Technologies have become, within a short time, one of the basic building blocks of modem industrial society. Understanding IT, and mastering basic skills and concepts of IT, are now regarded as part of the core education of all people around the world, alongside reading and writing. IT now permeates the business environment and underpins the success of modem corporations as well as providing government with cost-effective civil service systems. At the same time, the tools and technologies of IT are of value in the process of learning, and in the organisation and management of learning institutions.

Within the United States of America, French is of importance in only two areas, Louisiana and New England, the latter often being referred to as the Québec d'en bas for its high number of French-Canadian immigrants. Among the six states that constitute New England, Massachusetts is the one that attracted most of them, Québécois as well as Acadiens. Despite the high number of citizens of French-Canadian origin and the proximity to Canada, French has been losing ground as a langue du foyer in all of New England but especially in the southern part. This sociolinguistic study concentrates on the process of language decay among the French-Canadian population of Massachusetts. Based on a corpus consisting of 87qualitative interviews and a quantitative questionnaire survey of 392 questionnaires in 7 areas (covering the centers of French-Canadian immigration throughout Massachusetts),this study approaches the topic in a new, broader angle by encompassing the following aspects: ananalysis of U.S. Census data on ancestry and language use, an overview of the history of French-Canadian presence in Massachusetts, various specificities of the varieties of Canadian French spoken there, as well as ananalysis of the extralinguistic factors, such as the heterogeneity of the French-speaking population, and the intralinguistic consequences, such as unskilled code-switching,of language decay.
