La Franche-Comté eut son Grand Siècle au XVIe siècle, sous les Habsbourg, princes de la maison d'Autriche et rois d'Espagne. Ce n'est là qu'un petit territoire, un pays isolé, minuscule parcelle d'un gigantesque empire sur lequel le soleil ne se couche jamais. Sa grandeur est ailleurs. Chère au coeur de Charles Quint, elle a conservé ses traditions et ses libertés, elle a su résister à la centralisation et à l'unification. Réserve de diplomates et de capitaines, elle a fourni à ses maîtres une élite de fonctionnaires internationaux dont les Granvelle sont les plus nobles figures. Terre de fidélité, elle a refusé le protestantisme, mais ses habitants, catholiques fervents, ont aussi, en hommes de leur temps, cru aux diables et aux sorcières. Longtemps la paix lui a assuré une tranquille prospérité. Elle a fait vivre ses vignerons du bon pays, ses défricheurs de la montagne, ses ouvriers des forges et des salines. Mais dans la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, elle n'a pas échappé à la guerre de Trente Ans qui, avec son cortège de famines et d'épidémies, a décimé sa population, ruiné son économie, sonné le glas de son " siècle d'or ". Jean-François Solnon est agrégé de l'Université et docteur en histoire. Il est maître de conférences d'histoire moderne à l'université de Franche-Comté. Il est l'auteur de La Cour de France (Fayard, 1987).

Driven by a desire for glory and renown, Louis XIV presided over France's last great burst of territorial expansion in Europe. During the first three decades of his rule, his armies conquered numerous territories along France's borders. After 1688, however, the tide of conquest turned as the kingdom was plunged into crisis. For the remainder of his reign, the king and his people endured wars against grand alliances of European powers, ecological disasters, economic depression, state bankruptcy, and demographic stagnation. Expansion and Crisis in Louis XIV's France examines these central yet understudied aspects of the age of the Sun King through the experience of Franche-Comté, a possession of the Spanish empire with a long history of autonomy, conquered by Louis XIV in 1674. Dee's detailed research reconstructs the ensuing dialogue -- sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant -- between the king and the elites who ruled this province. The integration of Franche-Comté into France proved to be a protracted process involving confrontation, negotiation, and compromise. The resulting regime was then severely tested by the challenges of Louis XIV's late reign; its survival demonstrated how the king had brought a distinctly early modern state to the height of its development. This study offers significant new insights on the growth of the territorial state in early modern Europe, the nature of the French absolute monarchy, and the political legacy of the Sun King. As put forth by Edwards, the eastern duchy and the western county of Burgundy constituted a frontier society from the death of Charles the Bold in 1477 until 1540. Through detailed case studies and family reconstructions of elites from the Saône River valley, specifically the cities of Dijon, Dole, and Besançon, this book examines the social, cultural, political, and economic relationships of the Burgundians on a local level.
