Quantitative anaesthesia - exact registration of the degree of anaesthesia - has long been the anaesthetist's dream. Such pre cision could decrease the risk for the patient. Can -this dream now be realized in the foreseeable future? And can the quantifi cation be technically verified? This workshop was organized for these questions to be discussed by a group of experts. Schleswig-Holstein was a logical location for such a gathering. Medical and associated technical advances have socioeconomic consequences: in Schleswig-Holstein there are nowadays more jobs in medical technology than in the traditional shipbuilding industry. The encouragement of medical research and related technical innovation is thus a central component of public poli cy. One result of this emphasis was the recent setting up of a study group on medical technology, one of the aims of which is to provide a forum in Schleswig-Holstein for meetings such as this. The intention is to consolidate Schleswig-Holstein's reputation as a centre for both medical-technical development and scien tific discussion. The organizers of this scientific workshop thank the Schleswig Holstein Ministry of Economics and Transport and Dragerwerk AG for their support.

This book records the presentations given at a workshop held in Bonn in May 1994. The aim of the meeting was to bring together scientists from various disciplines and clinicians to discuss within a group of experts the theoretical, medical, engineering, and regulatory aspects of automated control of therapeutic interventions in. anaesthesiology. The meeting was considered a continuation of a preceding work shop on "Quantitation, Modelling and Control in Anaesthesia" [1], which was held also in Bonn 10 years ago in May 1984. That workshop dealt with problems of how to quantitate concepts like anaesthetic depth, how to model anaesthetic drug disposition, how to link phar macokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and how to use such concepts for the control of anaesthetic drug delivery. With respect to these topics the current proceedings have simultaneously both a broadened and a narrowed perspective. It is broadened in so far as the topics of the workshop did not focus exclusively on anaesthetic drugs and the control of their delivery, but did also discuss anaesthesia machine monitoring and patients therapeutic monitoring as well as control of blood pressure and artificial ventilation. The proceedings have nar rowed the perspective insofar as they do not intensively discuss the processes of quantitation and modelling but presuppose them and give more room to control, especially automated control. During the past 10 years informatics has tremendously expanded its knowledge and methods applicable to control problems.

Many drugs used in current anesthetic practice are administered intravenously. An appreciation of their kinetics and dynamics is of great assistance in determining the most appropriate drug to use, and optimal dosage regimens for any given patient. This book is specially oriented to the requirements of anesthesiologists. It will enable the student of those subjects to gain enough knowledge to make these subjects usable in daily anesthetic practice. As such it is intermediate in difficulty between mathematically oriented texts, and those which only offer a very qualitative understanding of these subjects. Practical applications and examples of the uses to which kinetic and dynamic principles can be put in daily practice are emphasized and illustrated. Basic principles and techniques with which the reader can perform kinetic and dynamic calculations are explained simply and demonstrated in detail using examples derived from clinical practice. Two appendices provide kinetic and dynamic data on the most commonly used anesthetic drugs. The last chapters use the principles discussed in the first chapters to show how variations of normal physiology and disease affect drug kinetics and dynamics. This is especially valuable to the clinician as it enables clinically useful, albeit qualitative, predictions to be made of the direction of any change of kinetic and dynamic parameters of drugs due to these factors.
