In high-precision optical measurements, noise due to quantum fluctuations in the amplitude and phase of the probing field becomes the limiting factor in detection sensitivity. While this quantum noise is fundamental and not a result of detection, it is possible to engineer a quantum state that has reduced noise in either amplitude or phase (at the cost of increasing noise in the other) called a quadrature-squeezed state. In this dissertation, we study the use of quadrature-squeezed vacuum states for low-light imaging and develop a quantum detection method to measure the spatial dependence of the quantum noise using a camera instead of the traditional homodyne detection. Our novel quantum imaging scheme paves the way for ultra-low-light imaging due to the inherently few photons in the squeezed vacuum state. We also expand the method beyond camera limitations using single-pixel imaging techniques, making the detection method accessible to a broad range of wavelengths where quantum-limited cameras may be difficult to find.

Recent advancements in quantum-enabled systems present a variety of new opportunities and challenges. These technologies are important developments for a variety of computing, communications, and sensing applications. However, many materials and components relevant to quantum-enabled systems exist outside of the United States, and it is important to promote the development of assured domestic sources of materials, manufacturing capabilities, and expertise. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a 2-day workshop to explore implications and concerns related to the application of quantum-enabled systems in the United States. This workshop focused on quantum-enabled computing systems, quantum communications and networks, and quantum sensing opportunities. Participants explored the path to quantum computing, communications, and networks, opportunities for collaboration, as well as key gaps, supply chain concerns, and security issues. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

.Precise control of quantum states is a cornerstone of quantum science and technology. Recently, a multi-level electronic spin system in a robust room-temperature solid, based on the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond, has emerged as a leading platform for quantum sensing as well as quantum information processing at room temperature. Developing new approaches to high-precision NV spin manipulation provides key insights for advancing these quantum technologies. In this thesis, I demonstrate three experimental methods for controlling NV spins with various concentrations toward high-performance magnetic field sensing and imaging. First, the wide-field optical magnetic microscopy experiment provides ensemble- NV control via continuous-wave electron spin resonance and camera-based parallel spin-state readout. This microscope offers a factor of 100 larger field-of-view compared to the confocal detection size, which enables magnetic imaging of populations of living bacteria. Second, the Fourier magnetic imaging experiment demonstrates for the first time multiple-NV control using phase encoding. Pulsed magnetic field gradients encode in the NV spin phase the information about the position of the NV centers as well as the external magnetic field in the Fourier-space. This scheme allows 100-fold improvement in spatial resolution beyond the optical diffraction limit, and has higher signal-to-noise ratio than other super-resolution imaging techniques when applied to NV spins. Third, the geometric phase magnetometry experiment employs single-NV control using a Berry sequence, consisting of off-resonant microwaves whose parameters vary along a cyclic path, thereby realizing 100 times larger magnetic field dynamic-range compared to the typical Ramsey-type interferometry approach. Finally, I discuss the possibilities of combining these techniques to realize various other quantum applications in future work.

"This thesis describes the application of compressive sensing to several challenging problems in quantum imaging with practical and fundamental implications. Compressive sensing is a measurement technique that compresses a signal during measurement such that it can be dramatically undersampled. Compressive sensing has been shown to be an extremely efficient measurement technique for imaging, particularly when detector arrays are not available. The thesis first reviews compressive sensing through the lens of quantum imaging and quantum measurement. Four important applications and their corresponding experiments are then described in detail. The first application is a compressive sensing, photon-counting lidar system. A novel depth mapping technique that uses standard, linear compressive sensing is described. Depth maps up to 256 x 256 pixel transverse resolution are recovered with depth resolution less than 2.54 cm. The first three-dimensional, photon counting video is recorded at 32 x 32 pixel resolution and 14 frames-per-second. The second application is the use of compressive sensing for complementary imaging--simultaneously imaging the transverse-position and transverse-momentum distributions of optical photons. This is accomplished by taking random, partial projections of position followed by imaging the momentum distribution on a cooled CCD camera. The projections are shown to not signicantly perturb the photons' momenta while allowing high resolution position images to be reconstructed using compressive sensing. A variety of objects and their diffraction patterns are imaged including the double slit, triple slit, alphanumeric characters, and the University of Rochester logo. The third application is the use of compressive sensing to characterize spatial entanglement of photon pairs produced by spontaneous parametric downconversion. The technique gives a theoretical speedup N2/log N for N-dimensional entanglement over the standard raster scanning technique. Entanglement imaging is demonstrated at 1024 dimensions-per-photon with channel capacities exceeding 8.4 bits-per-photon. In practice, the measurement time is reduced from 310 days for the standard technique to 8 hours for the compressive technique. An entropic steering inequality is violated to witness entanglement. The final application is a compressive wavefront sensor that unites compressive sensing with weak measurement. We show how a twisted-nematic spatial light modulator can be be used to weakly couple an optical field's position and polarization degrees of freedom. The complex nature of the weak value is used to directly measure random projections of the real and imaginary parts of the optical field, where polarization serves as an ancillary meter. We obtain 256 x 256 pixel wavefronts from only 10,000 random projections. Photon-counting detectors provide sub-picowatt sensitivity"--Pages ix-x.
