Excerpt from Quarterly Compendium of Medical Science, 1887, Vol. 17: A Synopsis of the American and Foreign Literature of Medicine, Surgery and Collateral Sciences I have struggled with the delirium of fevers, and with the delirium of tremor ous drunkards, but I never before met a patient so violent as was this poor girl. I remained with her the remainder of the night, and repeated the morphine in quarter grain hypodermatic does; I do not now recall exactly how many, pro bably half a dozen. The morphine acted beneficially almost from the first, and the patient, toward morning, went into a slumber, respirations falling to ten per minute about five o'clock. Excerpt from Quarterly Compendium of Medical Science: A Synopsis of American and Foreign Medical and Surgical Literature; January, 1888 Upon the first group of cases I shall not dwell further than to note that condi tions of the endocardium, apparently the most favorable, may exist without the oes currence of infarcts. In several instances of severe ulcerative endocarditis, there was a notable absence of multiple emboli; while in others the distribution has been peculiar - Jor instance, to the abdominal viscera. Or to the intestine chiefly. I have, also, the records of twenty cases with numerous endocardial vegetations, in which there were no infarcts. Excerpt from book: spongy tissue that is frequently (ouiul around the lachrymal canal is held to be abnormal and due to the propagation of a chronic rhinitis which leads to swelling with hyperplasia of the venous plexus. Congenital C/anoitt. To the New York Pathological Society, (N. Y. Med. Jour., Oct. 24): Dr. L. E. Holt presented the heart, lungs, and kidneys of a child which had died of congenital cyanosis, forty-eight hours after birth. There was a distinct syphilitic history; the child was born about the eight month; it weighed between four pounds and four pounds and a half, and was cyanotic. The respiration was very rapid, and the pulse could not be counted. Examination of the lungs showed over both sides marked diminution in resonance and many line rles. At the autopsy the lungs were found to be solid, did not crepitate at all, and sunk in water; it was difficult to find with the unaided eye any air cells which had been distended. The foramen ovale was sufficiently large to admit two fingers; the right ventricle was slightly thickened; there was no disease of the valves. The spleen was enlarged and hard, and showed venous congestion. Externally the kidneys were slighth' softened; the cortex was quite pale, and the pyramids were somewhat congested, showing uric-acid infarctions. There was interstitial nephritis. Morbid anatomy is on this view merely a symptom or sign of disease, and has no more value pathologically than any other objective phenomenon.
