Lives That Resist Telling challenges the resounding scholarly silence about the lives of migrant women who identify as lesbian, queer, or nonheteronormative. Reworking social science methodologies and theories, the essays explore the experiences of migrant Latina lesbians in Los Angeles; Latina lesbians whose transnational lives span the borders between the United States and Mexico; non-heteronormative migrant Muslim women in Norway and Denmark; economically privileged Chinese lesbian or lala women in Australia; and Iranian lesbian asylum-seekers in Turkey. The authors show how state migration controls and multiple institutions of power try to subjectify and govern migrant lesbians in often contradictory ways, and how migrant lesbians cope, strategize, and respond. The essays complicate and rework binaries of visibility/invisibility, in/out, victim/agent, home/homeless, and belonging/unbelonging. Tellability emerges as a technology of power and violence, and conversely, as a mode of healing, (re)building a sense of self and connection to others, and creating conditions for livability and queer world-making. This book was first published as a special issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies.

"This doctoral study explores the ways in which the Canadian immigration regime socially organizes the everyday lives of queer and trans migrants with precarious status. Precarious status includes visitors, international students, temporary foreign workers, refugee claimants and protected persons, along with those detained and undocumented. Drawing from key theoretical insights from Marxist and critical race and Marxist-feminisms, along with queer diasporic critique, this study traces the historical and transnational conditions of the heterocisnormative violence that compel queer and trans people to migrate from the Global South to Canada. This dissertation applies an adapted institutional ethnography methodology and conducts interviews in concert with textual analysis of key policy and media texts in order to map out the generalized social character of precarious status for queer and trans migrants. By engaging in a reflexive research process, the findings begin with the entrée to the study and subsequently introduce participant narratives and migration trajectories to Canada. By starting with actual experiences, the findings reveals how queer and trans migrants enter the Canadian immigration regime, along with how they shift between precarious status, lose status and/or enter detention. The findings also examine the disjuncture between ideological accounts of precarious status and the actualities of queer and trans migrant life. This study concludes by proposing key recommendations related to social work policy, practice and research in the area of queer / trans migrations and considers the implications for social movement building with queer and trans migrant communities. " --

Europe is a popular destination for LGBTQ people seeking to escape discrimination and persecution. Yet, while European institutions have done much to promote the legal equality of sexual minorities and a number of states pride themselves on their acceptance of sexual diversity, the image of European tolerance and the reality faced by LGBTQ migrants and asylum seekers are often quite different. In this first edited collection in English on Abdellah Taïa, Denis M. Provencher and Siham Bouamer frame the distinctiveness of the Moroccan author’s migration by considering current scholarship in French and Francophone studies, post-colonial studies, affect theory, queer theory, and language and sexuality. In contrast to critics that consider Taïa to immigrate and integrate successfully to France as a writer and intellectual, Provencher and Bouamer argue that the author’s writing is replete with elements of constant migration, “comings and goings,” cruel optimism, flexible accumulation of language over borders, transnational filiations, and new forms of belonging and memory making across time and space. At the same time, his constantly evolving identity emerges in many non-places, defined as liminal and border narrative spaces where unexpected and transgressive new forms of belonging emerge without completely shedding shame, mourning, or melancholy.
