Depuis la commémoration officielle du 150ème anniversaire de l'abolition de l'esclavage, en passant par la Conférence Mondiale contre le racisme à DURBAN (Afrique du Sud) où les Africains et les descendants des victimes déportées à des fins d'esclavage réitérèrent leur demande de réparations aux anciennes nations négrières, et surtout depuis la criminalisation de la traite et de l'esclavage transatlantiques par la loi Taubira, on assiste à une montée en flèche des thèses révisionnistes, voire négationnistes élaborées par certains historiens, chercheurs et penseurs occidentaux. Cet essai qui se veut réappropriatif de l'histoire africaine, revisite les thèmes du servage interne ainsi que les idéologies racistes et théocratiques qui justifièrent dès le 15ème siècle l'achat de captifs noirs, leur déportation et enfin leur réduction à l'esclavage après revente. Il s'attache aussi à cerner la responsabilité de certains rois africains, sans oublier d'aborder les diverses formes de résistances opposées à l'entreprise négrière par les Africains, d'abord sur leur continent, ensuite sur leurs lieux de déportation dans le "Nouveau" Monde. Dans cet ouvrage l'auteur en dresse l'inventaire aussi bien pour l'Afrique que pour sa diaspora établie dans les Caraïbes (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Sainte-Lucie, Jamaïque, Ayiti,...), en Amérique du Sud (Brésil, Guyane,...) et aux Etats-Unis d'Amérique et revient par une approche juridique sur les concepts de crime contre l'humanité et de génocide qui, après un état des lieux objectif et rigoureux des conséquences de ces crimes, ouvrent tout naturellement le débat sur la grande question des réparations. Le travail de mémoire authentique qui, bien que timide, est déjà entrepris par les Africains et leurs frères et soeurs dispersés dans le monde est souligné et encouragé.

The forced migration of Africans to the Americas through the trnasatlantic slave trade created primary centres of settlement in the Caribbean, Brazil and the United States - the cornerstones of the New World and the black Americas. However, unlike Brazil and the US, the Caribbean did not (and still does not) have the uniformity of a national framework. Instead, the region presents differing situations and social experiences born of the varying colonial systems from which they were developed. Using the Caribbean experience as the focus, Christine Chivallon examins the transatlantic slave trade and slavery as founding events in the identification of a black diaspora experience. The exploration is extended to include the United States to exemplify contrasting situations in slavery-based systems and identifies the links between the expressions of culture emanting from the black populations of the New World and the diversity of interpretations of the cultural identities of the black Americas.Divided into three main parts, The Black Diaspora of the Americas firstly examines the foundation of the black experiences of the New World by considering the slave trade.
