This is a great combination book that starts out with learning the "up-picking" Old-Time banjo style and then moving into the more common Three-Finger banjo style. Beginning with the Up-picking" style, it's a great way to get familiar and comfortable with banjo chords, tabs, sound and feel of playing banjo and makes and easy transition into the more difficult Three-Finger style. The Up-Picking style plays the melody and a brush chord with a plink of the 5th string. It is a great style to play and sing with. Most of us are familiar with the Three-Finger style. This style incorporates "rolls" that include the melody of the song within them and is a fast and moving sound and style that is best used for instrumentals and solos. In the end, the student masters two completely different styles of banjo picking!

Learning how to play the banjo can be challenging, but Anna E. Uptain has created a book that starts you out playing an easy to learn style of banjo called "up-picking". Up-Picking is a great melodic/chordal style of playing that incorporates a strum and a plucky 5th string which makes for a great solo style, as well as a great accompaniment. In teaching this style in her classes, Anna has found that most beginners have success with up-picking and it also makes for an easy transition to the three finger style of banjo playing. In this book you will learn how to read and play tablature, chords, hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides. All are incorporated into many favorite old time, traditional songs.
