Excerpt from Quintin Matsys, the Blacksmith of Antwerp It was very cold the sky was covered with thick clouds, portending a heavy fall of snow; the wind howled and moaned as it rushed along the narrow streets, compelling those whose business kept them abroad to fold their cloaks closer round them and hurry forwards. Among those thus occupied was a tall, gaunt looking man his person was closel enveloped in a large cloak, which he had f0 ded tightly about and in which he buried his nose and chin there was just enough of his figure to be defined to show that he was as gaunt as he was tall, and he muttered exclamations suficiem to tell he was equally impatient. As he proceeded along the di 'erent streets at a quick pace, he paused occasionally to look at the name of the street he happened to be in, and then went on again in the same manner ever and anon, as the wind swept past him, sharp and cold, venting an angry grunt at what he had no )ower to control. This carefully crafted ebook: “A Tale of Two Cities + Great Expectations (2 Unabridged Classics)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations are two much-loved novels by Charles Dickens. Tale of Two Cities is a novel set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The main characters — Doctor Alexandre Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton — are all recalled to life, or resurrected, in different ways as turmoil erupts. Great Expectations centers around a poor young man by the name of Pip, who is given the chance to make himself a gentleman by a mysterious benefactor. Great Expectations offers a fascinating view of the differences between classes during the Victorian era, as well as a great sense of comedy and pathos. Charles John Huffam Dickens ( 1812 – 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's most memorable fictional characters and is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. During his life, his works enjoyed unprecedented fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was broadly acknowledged by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to be widely popular.

In 1381, England was on the brink - the poor suffered the effects of war, the Black Death, and Poll Tax. At this time the brave Wat Tyler arose to lead the commoners, forming an army who set off to London to meet with King Richard II and present him with a list of grievances and demands for redress. Tyler was treacherously struck down by the Lord Mayor. His head hacked from his shoulders, pierced on a spike, and made a spectacle on London Bridge. Yet he lived on through the succeeding centuries as a radical figure, the hero of English Reformers, Revolutionaries, and Chartists. The Life and Legend of a Rebel Leader: Wat Tyler examines the eponymous hero's literary afterlives. Unlike other medieval heroes such as King Arthur or King Alfred, whose post medieval manifestations were supposed to inspire pride in the English past, if Wat Tyler's name was invoked by the people, the authorities had something to fear.
