Qunellis è un racconto di fantascienza così impropria da non essere solo fantascienza. Qunellis è un serpente di stoffa, forse un giocattolo, incongruamente sopravvissuto a millenni di mutazioni che lo hanno trasformato in un essere vivente e senziente con facoltà e caratteristiche molto speciali. È lui il protagonista principale di questo breve romanzo ambientato in un tempo indefinibile e in un mondo brutale dominato, anzi martoriato, da una tecnologia deteriorata capace di autoriprodursi, la cui origine si perde in un passato remotissimo che di tutto è il solo colpevole e che forse altro non è che il nostro presente. Un mondo infernale e sospeso, in cui imperversa un’imprevedibile capacità di combinazione genetica che ne fa un luogo affollato di vite incompiute e incomplete, fragili e disperate ma al contempo tenaci nella ricerca, ognuna a modo suo, di una ragione d’essere. Ecco perché accanto a Qunellis si muovono anche altre creature, strane e straordinarie. Mulinello. Il vortice alto come una montagna che vaga per il mondo e prende vita e coscienza grazie alle relazioni che s’instaurano fra gli oggetti e le entità che vanno a orbitare nelle sue spire. Ombra Cangiante. Dalla bellezza feroce e opportunista dedita alla realizzazione di un sogno egoista, forse perché lei stessa è ciò che rimane di un egoistico sogno di grandezza. Tibya. Di tutti l’unica che derivi direttamente e coscientemente da chi abitava quei luoghi millenni prima. Il Pozzo: sensibile e solitario fino alle estreme conseguenze. E infine Bomba, l’ordigno intelligente in cui si evolve qualcosa di simile a una coscienza. Loro sono i protagonisti di una rapida vicenda che attraversa momenti di disperazione ma approda a un finale aperto, di speranza.
