Law, politics, and society in the modern West have been marked by the increasing power of the judge: the development of constitutional justice, the evolution of international judiciaries, and judicial systems that extend even further into social life. Judges make decisions that not only enforce the law, but also codify the values of our times. In the summer of 2000, an esteemed group of judges and legal scholars met in Provence, France, to consider the role of the judge in modern society. They included Robert Badinter, former president of the Constitutional Council in France; Stephen Breyer, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States; Antonio Cassese, the first president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia; Dieter Grimm, former vice president of the Constitutional Court of Germany; Gil Carlos Rodriguez, president of the Court of Justice of the European Union; and Ronald Dworkin, formerly of Oxford University, now professor of philosophy and law at the New York University Law School. What followed was an animated discussion ranging from the influence of the media on the judiciary to the development of an international criminal law to the judge's consideration of the judge's own role. Judges in Contemporary Democracy offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the powers and the role of judges in today's society.

Faith In The Familiar written by Kim Knibbe and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-20 with Religion categories.

Faith in the Familiar is an ethnography of religious change in the Netherlands, a country that has moved from strongly pillarized to strongly secularist in the space of fifty years. This book shows how people look back on this, but also how Catholic rituals continue to play a role in the reproduction of place. Furthermore, it shows how forms of spiritualism and new age have become part of a pluralistic local religious landscape, and are used to create new ways of relating to religious authority and to reshape personal relationships. Situating itself within general theories of religious change in Western Europe, it offers a contribution to this discussion from an angle that is often neglected, focusing on locality, rather than on globalization; on what happens to ‘old’ religion, rather than on new religious trends, on popular forms of ‘spirituality’ rather than on middle class and highbrow spirituality.

Drug Delivery To The Respiratory Tract written by David Ganderton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Medical categories.

In treating diseases of the respiratory tract, the direct administration of drugs has great advantages in terms of clinical efficiency. This book reviews the most important recent developments in drug delivery systems to the respiratory tract. Starting with a detailed description of lung strucure and function, successive chapters investigate the usefulness of the pulmonary presention of beta-agonists, steroids and chromoglycate, and explain metabolic function and susceptibility to chemical damage from the environment, showing that the lung is far from being a passive organ. Further contributions demonstrate the importance of mucus in humidification, particle capture and particle removal before attention is given to the practical problems of drug delivery and the commercially viable devices available to the pharmaceutical technologist: the metered dose inhaler, the powder inhaler, and the jet nebuliser. The final chapter examines the future role of intranasal delivery systems, based upon the principles described.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Translation From Basic Research To Clinical Practice written by B. Vucelic and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-09 with Medical categories.

The amount of information on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease is growing rapidly. This is reflected by a continuous increase in the number of papers presented at international GI meetings. To make things more difficult for practicing physicians, there is also a large number of new clinical trials being published which require periodical critical reviews and recommendations. Faced with these issues, the scientific commitee of the Falk Symposium No. 140 decided to take a different approach and to apply a novel format that is reflected in the title of the Symposium: "Translation from basic research to clinical practice". This book contains the proceedings of that Symposium, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on May 7–8, 2004. The sections are designed so that they start with the information from basic sciences on different aspects of these complex diseases and further lead to their clinical implications. Special attention is paid to the mechanisms of actions of established drugs. The last two sections are clinically oriented and focus on the most difficult aspects of both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. This format provides state-of-the-art chapters by leading experts in the field and at the same time up-to-date information on the clinical application of the new knowledge.
